Hello all

Just got my rear power window working, well sort off, put new gear in and degreased all moving parts then next lubed it all up and it works great with the key in the rear tailgate, but does not work with the front dash switch. Any ideas were to look first??? I checked all the fuses in the panel under dash, is there a seperate circuit breaker or fuse somewere else???

weird

I don't have an answer but I can tell you mine is doing the same thing, although, oddly, before it was working with the switch on the dash and not by key in theback, then about a year ago, it flipped and now only works by the key. It may be the switch itself....but idk

I had same problem last fall, eventually neither worked. If I remember there were 2 separate circuits.

the dash switch from circuit breaker goes to the blue w/ white stripe and blue w/ black stripe. to the wiring panel inside the tailgate works only with key.

the key worked off the plain blue wire that is always hot..

both require grounding thru the tailgate sensor switch.

I found shorts in several places mainly going from body to tailgate in the little rubber sock

I have a wiring diagram but I'd have to dig it up.

Different color wiring

Sethro,
Different years used different wiring colors. I'd make sure I had a wiring diagram for your year truck. I just went through this problem and the first thing I'd suspect is the under dash circuit breaker which should be mounted on the support coming out of the fire wall next to the brake pedal. You can pry off the cover and actuate the contact to see if it's the culprit. Otherwise patience, a good test light and some beer will go a long way.

Good luck,
Norm

The tail gate key switch is actually the "master" as it's hot all the time. The dash switch will only work if the key is in the ignition and you're at least in ACC Accessory. The common items for the window are the circuit breaker under the dash and the safety interlock on the drivers side of the tail gate. The interlock keeps you from operating the window with the tailgate down.

There's an excellent article on the 55 window repair & troubleshooting in one of the back issues of Toyota Trails. I can find it and scan it if you're interested along w/ a schematic for a 78.

One of the more common issues is the terminal strip in the tailgate where the tailgate key switch, dash switch and motor connect. They're prone to kind of disentegrating which results in hit and miss window operation.

yes I am very interested, if you have the time that would be great,

My comment may only apply if you are running glass fuses (not sure what year they moved to blade)

I had (ripped that POS out) glass fuses in my 69

Had A LOT of issues with the actual fuse box. All the fuses look and do test fine. The connects on each side of the fuse panel (only in two blocks) were flacky. Caused A LOT of troubleshooting headaches as they would show intermittant connectivity. You might take five minutes and be sure the fuse panel slots are functioning properly. Fairly quick and easy test.

IRRC - the top two were hot and the remining lower four were ACC.

As already strated... grounds in the tailgate could cause big headaches as well.

That was after '82 and before '84.

So my tailgate window in the Princess Pig finally stopped working yesterday... a couple days before I plan to drive to the TLCA McGrew Trail Ride. FAWK! PITA! :(

I heard a loud clunk while I was raising the window at the tailgate/key switch. It usually works great, but after the clunk... nothing. Barely an audible click when I use the tailgate switch now. The dash switch now no longer works either. Because I heard the loud clunk, I assume it is just the plastic gear, which I have a replacement of. I hope it is not electrical because I am inept at electrical stuff.

So, I am desperately searching for the Toyota Trails article that was written a few years ago that included everything to know about the rear tailgate/window combo. Anybody know what issue that article is in? I have not found it yet while searching.

Thanks and cheers, Carlos.

Hey
Keep trying to find the article, I am interested to find that info out too:)
mine just died/quit also. used to work great then has problems now wont work at all:mad:

EUREKA! I have found it... :)

'An FJ55 Rear Window Primer' by Gary Schmauch last appeared in the May/June 2004, Toyota Trails.

It's good stuff...
Good luck on getting it fixed. It is a pain to have it not working. When mine died, it was the safety switch that is built into the right side of the door frame. It prevents the glass from moving unless the door is 100% closed. The plastic piece on the side of the door had died of old age, so instead of replacing it, I just wired past the switch. John
