Rear Dust Shields are almost dust

Thank you. I'm taking a long break from mods but a locker is tempting. Without the locker, would that put the job at around $2k ?

Mmmm, around that yes.

Geez. That pricing is ridiculous. I'd pickup a low mileage whole rear axle assembly for that price from a wrecking yard. Probably doesn't even need R&R and would be a drop in.

Would the Tundra shields fit? Looks like those are only about $190 ea.

Car-Part lists exactly two rear axles in the US for 2008-2018 LC's. At $1500 + shipping and a whole bunch more work, the 19k mike axle would be doable but the 80k mile axle could be 2 years away from needling wheel bearings and backing plates :D

^Yup, I was looking at car-parts.com. Only pointing out that you can get a full assembly for the price he got quoted for replacing the shields.

For reference, this is the damage the rear dust shields see:

As you can see they start to blister (there should not be any gap) and then blow out completely

They added an additional spot weld at the bottom (where the blistering happens) when the part numbers superceded from the 46503-60220/46504-60360 to the 46503-60221/46504-60361. When quoting to do this job, they are not simply quoting these two parts and labor but rather the bearing assemblies and seals, retainers, washers and o-rings to do the job, perhaps even some park brake parts. That would need to verified with the shop offering the quote.

120k. Utah roads so salt in the winter but my frame and suspension are clean... these things just trap moisture in between those layers and you cant do much about it when installed on the axle. I wouldn't have touched them if it were not for my rear axle bearing failure. That should freak one out. You can get home from a trip on a bad backing plate... not so much a rear axle bearing failure. We are starting to see more rear failures too. I'd highly recommend anyone doing a rear locker/gears consider doing it, it shouldn't add more than $8-900 to the bill.

Yes, spray em with wax. There are many nooks and crannies in that area that need protection...
did I miss the reply on if the tundra splash guard or backing plate would fit with no issues? looks to be a bit less expensive if it can be a solution.

almost two for the price of one

Did anyone ever determine if the dust shields for the tundra fit the 200?
I have the same rust issue going on. I have been chasing a noise coming from the pass. Rear and I think I have pinpointed it to the rusty dust shields.

This issue is really troubling.

@cruiseroutfit

Kurt, can these brake dust shields be easily inspected for this rust and corrosion?

Is the inspection as simple as going under the truck? Or do I need to pull the tires? Or remove even more things?

Thanks in advance for your advice and insight.

Alfred

Reasonably from the exterior, climb under and look at the backing plate for any signs of blistering or corrosion. Mine were certainly visible from the exterior.
