Using a 5 lb hammer hit the side of the drum with a medium blow to loosen the drums. Before you do that, Make sure the front wheels are chocked, the parking brake is off and the axle is supported on jack stands. Don't swing for the the fence like a home run...you could break your drums. Just hit them with a decent smack on one side then the other.

Thanks Matt. I have that manual and was super helpful when I rebuilt my TC.

I'm jumping in as I'm dumbfounded as to how to start a new thread even though I've done it before. I have a rear drum rebuild kit and also replacing my front and rear differentials...Need to pull axles to pull third member to send to Marlin Crawlers...my read drums look different and I'm clueless on how to pull them. Anyone have ideas to the how? Explain to me like I'm 10 years old.

First loosen the star adjuster at the top of the backing plate. Look at the diagram in the FSM to see how the pieces fit, but it will come to feel when you actually do it. You'll need to press in the adjusting lever to free the rotation of the star adjuster, then rotate the wheel downward to reduce the overall length of the adjuster mechanism. This step is often time consuming and frustrating because is done by feel. Insert a small screwdriver or blunt probe to press the adjuster away from the star wheel, and simultaneously insert a brake adjusting tool into the hole to rotate the star wheel.

Once you have the adjuster loosened a lot that will aid in freeing up the drum, but if you have a lip around the inner margin of the drum the shoes can catch on it. Long bolts inserted into the drum may be enough to push it off, if not then it's time for a hammer and maybe pry bar.

You may also be dealing with rust bonding the brake drum to the end of the axle shaft.
