Hi All,

I was getting some heavy vibration at higher speeds that my mechanic kept telling me was likely wheel balance, which I knew wasn't. Turns out I need a new rear drive shaft. Am I best off just replacing with a used OEM, or would anyone suggest going with an aftermarket like a Tom Woods, or something I haven't considered? Mechanic told me if I go with a Tom Woods I'd have to replace both my front and back. Is that true? Whats your experience? Or should I just source an OEM? Someone in the facebook forum also suggested that a 100 series would fit on older Landcruisers, but he had a 60 and not a 62. Is that the same measurement? Anyone heard of this? Thanks ahead for your help..

David

What’s wrong w your driveshaft? Typically just replace the u joints and get it balanced and you’re good to go. If it’s damaged or bent then OEM, Tom woods or JE reel are some options.

Vibration can also be caused by incorrect pinion flange angle, both the xfer case flange and the diff flange need to be parallel to each other. Lots of YouTube vids on that. Angles could have changed due to xfer case mount wearing out or replacement, or any suspension work.

Dragging brakes or bent axle shaft can also cause vibes.

I’ve had each of these happen to me at various times over the years.

Can't answer about a 100 series rear shaft working with a FJ62. A rear driveshaft from a FJ60 would work but would need to be shortened.

I have used a rear FJ62 shaft in the rear of an 80 series. I don't think the lengths are exactly the same but were close enough. So a possibility is to use a rear 80 series if needed.

I also agree with the others, find another mechanic. Your driveshaft may only need new u-joints, if so go with OEM and not some off brand. At least find a mechanic that can give you a proper evaluation of your driveshaft.

Well to be fair he hadn’t taken it on the highway yet and it was my opinion that he didn’t trust until he took it on the highway itself. I kept telling him that I knew what a wheel balance vibration felt like. I’m sure there are plenty of people that go to the mechanic with opinions that don’t pan out ..

He clearly doesn’t understand basics, or is trying to get you spend unnecessary cash.

You either have bad ujoints or bad angles if it’s a driveshaft problem. Try removing the rear driveshaft and driving in in 4wd (fwd) and see if that helps at all

Is your 62 stock or modified.?

When is the last time everything had a proper grease job? Also, are the zerk fittings in phase?
