OK we're back in business, I rechecked my settings and it needed more adjusting, so continued with adjusting the Carrier Bearing Pre-Load and Boom!! I got it now the pinion rotates quietly again here's the vid:

And then there's that euphoric sense of accomplishment.
Good work! :clap::clap:

OK while I'm waiting for the 3rd member parts to arrive had to find something else to keep me busy so I pulled the old rear seals and bearings. Went to the local Autozone and rented the bearing puller, they give a 90 day window to return the tools so I'll put these tools to good use for the front axle as well.

I'm also thinking of going all out and installing disc brakes, what do y'all think?

Mike, great thread! Thank you for posting all the vids and pics -- very helpful for future reference. :)

Kudos to you for tearing in to this and "gettin' 'er done"! :D

Thanks Kris! I appreciate your kind words! I like everything on my 40 to work as intended and as such I repair and document everything to help others learn from my own failures, successes and experiences.

My window of opportunity!
Since I'm rebuilding the the rear axle this was the most opportune time to install disc brakes and a new suspension system.

The third member is now 100% rebuilt, replaced all the bearings and and pinion seal and adjusted it in accordance with FSM, however, the 3rdmember installation is now in the back burner as I'm replacing leaf springs with a brand new Old Man Emu suspension and also installing a brand new rear disc brake system.
I'm still waiting for the axle bearings and seals to arrive from SOR.

The OME suspension will arrive next Monday from TORFAB in Makilteo, WA.

Here are a few pics;

I recognize this stage of the job!
"Honey, I'm so far into this project it just makes sense to do the other upgrades now while it's all apart. " ;)

Hey Dick, that sums it up, fortunately I don't get any flak from the :princess:wife!

Upon closer inspection of the axle bearings revealed they were both shot after all, the rollers were ready to fall off. The 3rd member bearings were in sad shape as well
both carrier bearings and races were pitted, both pinion bearings were bad and had to cut one out since it was stuck on the pinion shaft, so there was a lot of bad juju in there. I'm glad I decided to take it apart completely and rebuild it.

You definitely made the right call, Mike. This is a really great thread! Nice work.

Amen. Better on your time and in the (extreme :)) comfort of your garage then out on the trail somewhere! ;)
