I did have to drill the bumper, not the fairlead, right?

Run synthetic rope if you are worried about kinks in cable :)

I'm going to install my winch this weekend, and will be drilling the fairlead. Is strength the reason for drilling the fairlead and not the bumper? Too many holes to close together would compromise the strength of the bumper because its thinner than the fairlead correct?

Never mind, this was a dumb question on my part. I took the winch out of the box looked at the bolt holes and now the answer is perfectly clear why not to drill the bumper. The winch mounting holes are correct in the bumper but not the fairlead.

How is it you buy a winch with a fairlead that doesn't fit? While I didn't buy a warn the fairlead was made to fit and it centered up nicely.

FWIW, this has been an issue with Warn and ARB since the ARB product started shipping to the USA. This has been covered to death on the original 80SCOOL list as well as MUD. It is a simple and straightforward installation other than the 2 holes that need to be drilled in the Warn roller fairlead. No over-thinking required, and IIRC there is only one way to put this on that will use the correct hardware supplied with the winch.

It is still like this on newer setups...had to drill new holes in roller fairlead for a buddies install. I wonder if those holes in bumper are only for hawse fairleads and ARB is pushing everyone to that setup instead?

Seems like they could have offered a simple template to make the lineup of holes accurate after all of these years of it being a known issue...LOL
