Shoot me.

Shoot me.

Well then. While WFB isn't everyone's cup of joe, this surprising comment sent me scanning the shelves to offer up alternatives - short of the easy route of heading upstairs to A&M's bookcases to scout the Tom Swift and Hardy Boys collections... Try these -

Up Front by Bill Mauldin My daddy told me about Mauldin and the iconic characters he developed during WWI, Willie & Joe.

Salmon on a Fly by Lee Wuff. Pioneering conservationist, bush pilot and a guy cool enough to have a fly named after him.

For those who actually like WFB, suggest Oliver Wendell Holmes - The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table. It contains a poem, The Deacon's masterpiece that's all about Cruisers.

This is a really good book:

Also, Susan Casey is one of my favorite non fiction writers (she is up there with Michael Lewis, Malcolm Gladwell and Curtis Wilkie). If you haven't read any of her stuff, start with this.

Finished this one last night. It was strong (and hilarious - some great one-liners). Keep in mind I can't freaking stand science fiction stuff. I'm not a star wars guy, etc.. This is a bit different... It's hard science (basically, McGyver in space) - no monsters, aliens, or talking droids... Since I am normally biased against this stuff and finished the book in a couple of days, some of you may really like it...

They are making it into a movie which comes out in the fall. Should be good.

Reading two books at a time right now, I'm bad about that. 1. Automotive Wiring and Electrical Systems by Tony Candela. 2. A Clearing in the Distance: Frederick Law Olmsted and America in the 19th Century by Witold Rybczynski. Inspired by a recent trip to Biltore Estate.

Will have to check out the Buckley!

Great book. Took me two days.
Horrible fire that burned a whole county up.

'Bout time - Olmsted's work in NC is awesome. Cheryl's in the Garden Club of America and went to a meeting in Buffalo NY where they toured some of his work up North.

More to the point - suggest those following the current political ramblings [for amusement only] might check out "The Last Hayride" - life and campaign times of Edwin Edwards in the 80's. His boast that he could only be beaten if he were "caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy" does sound a little dated for the current crop though; today, those could be a sure fire vote getters for some of them
