Ran a carfax on my new 80

I think the advice to just revoke this deal and get your $1K back is the best idea. A call to them with an explanation of what you discovered along with an immediate demand for your $1K is the best bet. I would probably arrange this xchange in front of the police station .

Get your $1000 back then report him. If you report him first your $1000 could be tied up for some time if not indefinitely.

Crazy that people still try to pull this s*** when carfax is so readily available. Glad you didn't give him the full $5k.

Ok, the car is not stolen...i contacted the owner who was on the title last and he said he sold it to a mom and pop dealership in Greenville, TX. Well his story lines up with the guy in Dallas selling it. He said he was selling it for a freind in Greenville, TX so that story lines up. The truck isn't stolen or anything like that which is good. I have all the paperwork signed by the previous owner. He signed everything over to the dealership in Greenville and instead of them transferring the title to the dealerships name they never did. I'll keep ya'll posted!

Hmm...the dealership probably never wanted their name attached to it because of the odometer change once in their possession.

A running cruiser for $5k seems like a great deal anyways. Just call the shop and point out the problem, ask for whatever discount you think is fair.

Its not extortion if you ask for it. If you dont want the truck for $5k or cant come to an agreement on price...just request to cancel the deal.

There is still the problem of the service station passing the truck even those the speedo didn't work and there is still the issue of the speedometer being removed! I am having the owner on the title pull up some paperwork and see what he has.

Is it supposed to be illegal to sell a vehicle without a working speedometer? I understand that the odometer won't work without the speedomter connected.

Just use those things as ways to get the price down...before ever mentioning the liability angle...

See if the shop will take $4k instead (or whatevers fair)

If they decline....casually mention "Hmm...well isn't this odometer fraud, which is.......um, illegal? I want the truck, I just know there will be more repairs needed than I was originally aware of...."

I never find 80's in that price range unless they are horribly beaten up. Seems like a good deal that you can make better...or easily walk away from if you choose not to complete the deal.

The biggest problem is that you paid $5000 (too much) for a vehicle that’s mileage is unknown and misrepresented. Odometer fraud is a federal crime. They are trying to take you for a ride. There are other rigs out there and good deals to be had. Don't let those folks involved get away with ripping you off and others. I H8usedcarsalemen!

80me, i did buy for $5K but i have only given him $1k of the 5 so far.

My 80 was $4700 with 165,000 on the clock. (car fax was consistent)
I wouldn't do business with anyone who is so obviously guilty of fraud. How would you feel if your mom bought a car from him a year later? He wanted it inspected so he didn't get caught. It was rolled back so that it would sell for $5K. It was a "friend" selling it making it harder to convict the crook. Dirty scum bags! All for a little bit of $$$. How do they sleep at night?

Maybe, but they have a great headgasket and heater hoses;)

I'll agree with you on that, especially with the recent rash of blown HG's on the board. I just hope mine holds up, if not, it might be diesel time.

Yeah, I know, but do you really want to do business with a crook like this? You may have an attachment to the car already and the sooner you get it back to the guy the better. Take pictures of the alterations. Keep clear records of conversations and transactions. It may be attractive at $1000 for this rig but you are still enabling the crooks that do this to you, your family and the otherwise honest and naive public. Just wrong!

Ok, called and left two messages with the guy i picked the truck up from and he hasn't called back. What if he never calls back? What do i do with the truck? Put it in my garage and call authorities?

I think you should get ahold of the authorities asap. let them know the situation, in order to exhonorate you from any potential blame/criminal charges, shoud the car come up as stolen or sold without the owners knowledge. You could also get the police to track down the actual owner, and they may be able to lead you to the seller, if this is truly a case of an honest mistake (which i doubt). good luck with it.

Where did you meet with him? A business? Drive there. Might go to his pops station. Might want to call someone with authority, regarding this issue, for advice.

I know it might seem a mess but you are in a good spot. Only $1000 out (you could part the truck and make more than that) and title in hand. For $4000 my guess is the guy is going to call back.

When you by used cars or used anything from anyone always get a written and signed bill of sale that includes an odometer statement and the sellers info. I only buy cars from an individual, private sale. I lucked out on ebay of all places. Look thru your local paper or check out many used car listings online. They are out there.

you have to keep one thing in mind I think, and that is that if you buy it anyway, you will be in possession of a truck where the odometer has been rolled back. Even if you get a certificate of some sort from the police, do you think it'll be a fun time to try and sell it sometime? I suspect that in a few years, the carfax equivalent will be even more accurate...
I wouldn't do it. Too many other possibilities out there...

OK, i finally got a hold of the guy and i told him the situation. First he was mad that he got lead on by his buddy he was selling the car for and that he could get his dad's service station in trouble.

So he calls the guy (who owns the mom and pop dealership) and tells him what's going on and the guy said " oh yea i knew about the speedometer being removed...it made a ticking sound and was annoying". So the guy i got the car from said ok, just bring the truck back and i'll give you tour $1000 cash back cause i have two other people who want to buy and they don't care about the mileage.

I call BS they just got busted and for him to say " i have two other people wanting to buy this thing and they don't care about mileage" was priceless. How do those two people know how many miles are on the car?

So question...do i take back, get my $1K back and then call authorities or do i keep the truck and call authorities. I have the evidence sitting in my garage and if it goes back into their hands they will try and cover their tracks.

Thoughts?

go to the cops. i'd hate to know that someone else gets swindled, just to get back the money. who knows how many other vehicles have been fraudulently sold to unsuspecting buyers. Go get 'em!

take a bunch of photos, get your money back, then report it if you feel that's the right thing to do. And inform the potential buyers if you know who they are.

the notion that a car dealer would know that an odometer has been disconnected and think it's just nothing is kinda cute....

interesting also that the discrepancy was found in an earlier inspection and apparently not acted upon...

Sting time. Let the cops sort it out. You'll get your money back and piece of mind.
