Questions about buying a pig

it's not mine the guy is asking $8500. He says it's been sitting for 20 years. I was wondering if it was a decent deal.

If it’s been repainted and they covered any rust then $8500.00 is high, IMHO.

If it is original paint and you can confirm it’s never been repainted or touched up & no rust is bubbling through and the window rubber is intact and usable I would give the guy $8500.00 but I would feel better at 5K.

55 bodies are notorious for rust in hidden areas and can get expensive to fix even if you do the repairs yourself, rubber when you can find it can be 3K by itself so 5 to 7K for a good starter is a bargain.

Guessing the rubber is not good on that one, from what little I can see. Are both lower rear corners mashed in, or just the one?

If you're serious about it, ask the guy if you can pop the door panels and rear cargo panels. Get a flashlight and look around in the crevices. $8500 seems pretty darn high.......

I'm keeping my eye on the one at BAT, but am thinking it will go way over my $10k. I could do closer to $12 for something clean, but wanted the money to do some repairs and other things that something I buy would need.

It's in California and I'm in Alabama. My brother lives about three hours away and said he could go out there on the 19th but doesn't have time before that. I'm calling them today about it.

2500 that's it

I agree with BOB, $2500.00 is about the going price for a piggy in this condition.

FWIW I bought four 55’s for $2500.00 or less to build my 1 ½ pigs. With that said they all needed about $5000.00 plus in rubber and body repair to get to where this pig looks from the pictures, again Craigslist photos and descriptions are not always reliable but if this one was close to me I would take a drive out to first confirm it is reasonably rust free then talk them down to a reasonable price.

Good luck, looks like a nice find.

That floor board picture has me worried, but fixable.

I'd watch the BAT one, I don't feel like it will go too high. Most of those guys don't know what a 55 is.

Also agree with bob, mine was more rusted and rotted (coming from the Flathead Lake area) but was a running and regularly driven rig with a really good interior...$2k.

It depends what you want to fix/modify and don't want to. Since mine was destined to be a wheeler, it didn't matter that the body wasn't perfect or that the wiring needed a complete do over.

I'm looking for something I can drive for a few years while saving up the money to take it to a body shop and tell them to make it pretty. I drive a lot offroad, but don't do any real wheeling. I like doing mechanical work and fixing stuff. I just made my 88 Chevy an into 4wd. I really enjoy that kind of work, but I'm not a fan of body work.

I'm not. I've been thinking about all of your advise. I did think hard about it. Part of it was its near my brother and he has a couple days off, a place to work and all the tools I'd need. And I haven't seen him in a year or more. I found a rolled 55 near Sacramento that runs well he wanted $2000 for it. It has a SOR rebuilt engine, transmission and transfer case along with everything else. He said he'd go $1200 for it. I'll post that up if anyone wants it. He needs to get rid of it soon. It's still driving even though it's rolled. I could potentially be into it for $7200 plus I figured another $500 or so in extra parts to drive it home. The road trip home would have been worth the money because I would stop and see family.

There's a lot of ifs to this scenario though and I woke up not feeling great about it.

That blue one is almost identical to how mine looks/looked. I swear some colors rust less than others and mine only had a little rust on the rear floorboard that took all of 3 hours to fix. I paid $800 with no engine but could've paid all of $1200 with the engine. Unfortunately clueless people see the price of the 40's and think, oh I've got a land cruiser too and then price their 55 accordingly. If it was running and fairly sorted I would think $8500 would be top dollar for that one. I still maintain my almost rust free 72 was $800 and my dented running with a little rust 77 was only $900. From what I've seen, mine are both light-years ahead of what most people start with. Almost none are gonna be daily drive able from the get go... Then once you start tearing in to it you think... Hmmm maybe I'll paint this while it's out... Hmmm maybe I'll get a new one of these. Next thing you know you're Delancy with 4 Pigs and you still have never driven one but you have every Toyota part number memorized. It'd be a sketchy but fun roadtrip for 500 miles with a support rig... It'd be nuts to think you're gonna drive it across the US. Maybe you should just move to the west coast, it's better here anyway.
