Wow...WHY can't someone make a piggy back or mod some type of intercooler for our S/C'd LC's?? I 've begged and pleaded...airlaird
There are plenty of firms that will make an intercooler for you. Either you can do the engineering yourself or you can pay somebody to do it for you. No begging or pleading required. Bring money.

Well the problem isnt the intercooler, its the plumbing to it. That 90 degree bend is real rough for getting two pipes in there. You can cut the plenum piece attatched to the throttle to get more room, but I dont like the sound of that. Then you have to run both down to the front mounted intercooler. Ouch.

It's already been done, pictured, and posted on mud, some time ago.

I didnt say it couldnt be done, I meant that it would be hard to make a kit for it. Doing a one off mod is different than making a full kit. If I offended you, I'm sorry, I wasnt trying to argue with you at all. I have seen it done before, but it looked a little sloppy I thought, pipes all over the place. I have not seen the picture posted on mud yet however, but I would like to!

LX, I would love to see your cruiser on a dyno, but you may not be able to get it over the rollers......

No offense taken. Just letting Airlaird know all he has to do is spend some bucks and he can have his intercooler. No need to wait for somebody else to package it up.

Well. the pics from the alleged "heat exchanger" appears to be an intercooler.....on my engine configuration as posted earlier this week, an intercooler would fit..albeit I have no "trash can" airbox to get in the way. I can't find any shop in Dallas Texas of all places to fab one up. I 'll contact Webtrix as well...see if it is feasable.

Steve-O do you care to share more details on the 95-97 kit? ie is it a upgraded FP, an aftermarket or OEM supra? and the rise to rate FPR and possibly the piggyback chip. I don't think that you would include a rough price, would you?

Steve, I don't know what the performance gains were.

My suggestion was to chop the TRD plenum chamber (air outlet) and weld it back on rotated 180 degrees. This, of course, presumes the casting alloy can be welded (don't know whether or not the alloy used can be welded). If this were done, then the same routing that the Safari intercooler uses could be followed.

A number of years back I did a little bit of reserach into turbo & intercooling design, and I am familiar with some of the underlying engineering principles with respect to intercooler design.

I spent a little bit of time thinking through how to route the air from the TRD supercharger to an intercooler, and then found out Bill had already done it.

Photoman I see your pics of the intercooler setup, did you use a smaller nose pulley? looks as if it was removed, and what the heck are all of those wires everywhere for? What kind of seat of the pants gains were had?

Well we havent played around with the 95-97 too much yet. The turbo is almost finished, then we will get started on the fuel upgrade. The pump is not a Toyota part, it is an aftermarket pump. I looked into the supra tt which sounded nice, but expensive. I should have a price in a week or so. I try not to quote prices on anything until the kit is finished, I have gotten in a lot of trouble that way. Thanks, Steve.

Here are a couple of updated pics showing the intercooler plumbing
after powder coating. I designed them to work with my dual battery
setup.
Rainy Day – I had figured on starting with a 3.0” pulley. (stock is
3.2”) to allow for the plumbing losses. The one pic shows the
stock 3.2” pulley of the left and 3.0, 2.8, and a 2.6” that I have
machined down to try if necessary. FWIW, 2.6” is the smallest you
can go without spacing out the damper SC pulley and belt slack
adjuster.
The wires are a new engine wiring harness. A member from Canada needed a plug off a wiring harness by the computer so I sent it to him and just ran the new harness that far. Sorry, no info on the performance. Since I quit traveling for the photography a few years ago there has been no incentive to finish to cruiser. I promised some friends from Alaska and BC that I would come up next year, but I said the same thing last year. Life’s priorities you know. :frown:

Bill - looks great and should be the kind of stuff someone "should" offer for the s/c, at least in my opinion ;)

Now if you'd get busy fabricating those DS snorkles!

What about a Kenne-Bell "boost-a-pump" I put one on my TRD blown Tacoma & it eliminated the lean out condition under hard throttle. They are a bit pricy though. It senses the boost pressure; and, at about 3 psi it boosts the voltage to the fuel pump from 12 to 18 volts. The voltage boost is adjustable.

His is pretty much done with it ;)

By the way Bill, it's very nice to see a post from you. I know how busy the farm is keeping you and I'm happy to see you again.....

For those who do not have the pleasure of knowing Bill, he is one helluva craftsman.......

Yeah Dan, I meant for the rest of us thirsty forced induction intake freaks!

Bill's post are always great eye candy. Thanks for the motivation, Bill!
