Question about the rear seats

Hi! I’m new to this forum and I’m also new to owning a Land Cruiser, I have an FJ 60 84 and was wondering what this was for. I took of the seat covers that came with the car and found them. I wonder what they’re purpose is.

when the seat is folded flat they "latch" onto the seat bottom when it is folded up against the front seats
it helps keep the seat back down and flat
