long story short i picked up an 85 x-cab 4x4 (automatic) and i am doing some long over due maintenance. I rebuilt the front axle and had to replace the front calipers because several of the pistons were frozen and wouldn't budge. prior to working on the axle it didn't stop too well and pulled to the left. after i finished the front i went to bleed all the old fluid out of the system, i found the pass rear wheel cylinder had a broken bleeder valve and was leaking a little so i replaced it as well. While i was replacing the wheel cylinder i noticed that there was no a self adjuster nor any supporting peices. i removed the the drivers drum and it is the same way. I looked and the FSM and the chilton both show the adjuster but hint that there might be more then one style (configuration) of rear brakes. My question is, am i missing hardware or did some axles come without an automatic adjuster?

Does your parking brake work?

I can't speak on the different versions of brakes, but I can say that you are missing some things that are on my 85... If you're not in a hurry I'll be replacing my rear shoes next week some time and can take pics if no one else comes up with anything...

thanks for the feedback. The parking brake works after i freed up the"bellcrank" and took the slack out of the pads with the not so self adusting adjusters. i might swing by salvage yard and see if i can locate a 85ish axle for reference and see if they will sell some parts off of it.

There is a really good diagram in the FSM that shows how all the parts go together.

But I wouldn't spend a nickel on those brakes. Find an entire IFS-era ('86+) axle, swap the whole thing in. Besides being a little wider, the brakes and E-brake are MUCH better.

i'm not ready to swap axles yet on this one, it's going to be an old man truck for a few years more. although some new springs and shocks to hold me over might be a good idea. Plan = When my boy gets a little older this is going to be a truggy project.

As for the brakes, i'm just going to assume the parts are missing, I identified all the missing parts based on the FSM and toyodiy it all came to less then 50 bucks and the local dealer said the parts would be there in the morning. i'll put it together according to the FSM and see what happens.

Well i just got everything back togeather and road tested, It feels good to have working brakes.

I got all the parts today but couldn't find/identify a part for the self adjuster lever to attach to while at the parts dept so, after a bit is searching on the web i figured out the PO had installed the wrong shoes. so i headed over to the local parts and got the correct shoes (they have a post for the self adjuster built into the pads) and all the parts went togeather and worked perfecty. Thanks again for the input.
