Puma Air compressors have changed?!

I finally got one off e-bay,

good price, free shipping, excellent. I get it home and it looks different, the head looks a little smaller than that of Robert's and what I saw online. I check on the one I bought and look at the picture and it is different, so I have a look at the part numbers for both mine and roberts and turns out I got a slightly less heavy duty unit. His (and the older PUMA PD 1006) had a larger head with a cylinder liner in them. This one has a smaller one with no cylinder liner. The output is supposed to be the same but the construction ends up being different and if something wears out I'd need to change the entire cylinder and not just the liner. So I've got an e-mail to the seller to find out why the change. Anyone else notice the same porblem?
 
I was up at Rob Millson's new place today in Chemanius today (nice big shop and double garage!.) He has a 12 volt PUMA which he bought last year. We compared it to his new 24 volt PUMA and we noticed the 24 volt PUMA has a bigger cylinder head with more cooling fin surface area.

The cylinder bolt pattern was the same so the cylinder diameter looks to be same. The 24 volt PUMA has a larger replaceable air filter within a screw-on metal housing, whereas the 12 volt has a little flat filter pad. The relay housing on 24 volt is also a little different than the 12 volt.

I think Mat is comparing 2 12V compressors, though it's interesting to see the 24V version.

This is the (I guess older) 12V version. I've brought up 5 or 6 of them and they were all the same - but that was a year ago.

Actually it's different still, can't take a pic of it as it's burried in my truck right now. Both the 24 and the 12V pics you posted are different than what I have.
I received a response from the company that I bought it off and they said this was the new 12V model. Both the 24V and the 12V that you have there are still 2 part housings (a cylinder head and a cylinder lining). Both have cast steel housings, the one I received has an aluminum housing with no lining. I guess they are getting made cheaper or depending on the source where you purchase there are different versions.
I did fire it up and test it, after the warm up process I let it fill up. I air down a tire to 8PSI, and then it took a little less then 3 minutes to get back to 36PSI, on a 33X12.5R15. Still damn nice. My old Viair knock off took about 5 minutes to get from 20 to 32PSI, and I could cook on it after.

Glenn (24v) 315/R16 from 18 psi to 45 psi = 180 seconds (3 min)

Matt (12v) 12.5/R15 from 8 psi to 36 psi = less than 180 seconds (3 min)

12v (old style I think) 315/r16 from 18 to 42 psi = about 3.5 mins
 
What about these compressors? Graham and I have one. I got lucky and found one at MTF for $40 when I first bought my truck, it's an older model from Graham's model, but very similar, his has some minor design improvements. They seem to handle four 37's with no problems, and is fairly quick for it's size, from 10psi to 40psi in about 4 min.. We have used them a lot, and seem to be pretty reliable. I think Graham had a Viair before, and got one of these instead?

Got mine installed mostly permanently. Works great, I am surprised by how quiet it is and the head does not heat up much during operation. So far, even though the design is different than the other ones I've seen, I'm happy with it. We'll see how it holds up in the long run.
 
24 volt Puma in BJ74

Compact Installation of a 24 volt Puma air compressor in my BJ74

I rebuilt my ARB fridge mount (1/8” steel) and combined it with the Puma mount. Underneath is storage space for my Jack-All and other longish junk. Beside the Puma is a rack for a Cabalas “ammo box” which contains a catalytic heater. I was unable to mount the Puma with the cylinder head forward; as it would hit the back of the front seat. The rack is bolted to the floor and turnbuckles on two cargo tie-downs. It is wired with marine 6 gauge and a circuit breaker located by the batteries.Still enough room to sleep back there.
