Where did you get your tank?
That was a TCI fuel cell. I more recently built a tank for it though, over 30 gallons.

I am moving mine to rear outside. I bought a NOS confer tank it was a nogo with my 14 bolt pushed back 4 inches. I spent some time with tape measure and drew up a tank for rear. I had steel water jet cut at work and sent it to get bent on CNC brake. Front bottom and rear one piece 1/4in. Both sides and top built from 11 ga. Cubic inches converted to gallons should be 23 1/2 gal capacity. Here are a few pics putting it together

How did this turn out? Any updates?

I've flopped my rig with the tank under the seat over 50 times and never had a problem .
Remind me not to go wheeling with you 🤪

Do diesel 40s still have the tank in the cab? Or if you were going diesel, would you be more inclined to move the tank?

I kind of feel like I should move the tank in this case

This is common 40 information easily found in the 40 section.
All 40's/45's have the same tank location up to 12/78. then they move under the cab. The tanks are pretty much the same gas/vs diesel. There are four major variants of the 40 series tank (early-67, 68-72, 73-78, +79)

Thank you. Apologies. Will search instead of asking next time

Nice tank design! I ran into a similar challenge with my C14 axle, especially after moving it rearward, so I created a styrofoam mockup for a machine shop to replicate. It turned out great and it holds over 22 gallons.

I’m not sure why gas vs diesel would change the tank location. Seems to me people move the tank for two reason:
1) additional volume. The stock tank is kinda puny, so moving it h def allows for a longer range.
2) they aren’t comfortable with a gas tank in the cab. Other do t see a need to switch. Personal preference.

I lost tank volume by moving it to outside. There is more room under both seats for fuel but I didn’t want fuel vapors inside of the cab anymore, especially on those 8-10+ hour highway drives over mountain passes.

I know that I can have a tank inside of the vehicle without vapors releasing inside of the cab but this Cruiser always smelled like fuel, even when it was a few years old. Everything in that fuel system was replaced at least once, including the tank. It has been pretty good for the past 20 years using the 28 gallon under seat tank but occasionally, usually driving up I-70, it would release some vapors.

Maybe the vapors were coming from the engine compartment. Ha! This thing was rusty from when it was 2 years old so who knows.

Wow, that aluminum tank is gorgeous. If whoever built that did it for less then $2500 they are robbing themselves.

I have installed a couple of S10 Blazer 20 gallon tanks ahead of the rear axle on extended wheelbase '40s.

Cheap, simple, clean and easy.

I have used it in addition to the factory tank for extended range. On our longer trails the fuel mileage of the modified rigs with 40-45 inch Boggers or Ags can really suck.

I have not installed the Blazer tank behind the rear axle in no-extended wheelbase rigs myself, but a couple of friends have. Just as simple behind the axle as in front of it. Just depends on where the axle is located.

Mark...

I second this if you can get it to fit. I tried fitting one behind my axle but my differential wouldn’t clear. My links are also in the way to fit one in front of the rear axle. I paid less than $100 for the S-10 tank new so it wasn’t too much of a loss.

Yeah, if you have moved the axle back at all the S10 tank probably won't work behind the axle.

We are still running leaf springs on the rigs I mentioned so clearance was easy.

The cost of the S10 approach is nice too. I think my account price for a tank at the local parts store is about 60 bucks new in my hands. When the rest of it is all factored in, still well under 200.

I’ve been thinking about this as an aux tank. How did you plumb it?

I did this on my 100 and it was a super simple cheap perfect solution.

Although I’ve also not driven my 40 far enough to need aux fuel. Yet
