Ben is the one who talked me into the whole project. It was easy though...
I went with a stock converter. I thought about changing the stall some, but with 5.29s and a crawl box, it didn't take much to get into the rpm band on the 1FZ. I am hoping that the 2UZ will be similar.
I am pretty soft footed when it comes to wheeling so I should be good. Were you thinking a little more stall?
 
Engine/tranny/tcase/crawl box in one piece now. Working on the wiring harness.

Of course..I will be there working on it. Got the engine set in the bay today to start measuring for the mounts. The engine sits way back and will allow for some major radiator clearance. I will have pics tomorrow.
 
Fantastic project and great write up. Someday when I have more time I'd like to do the same thing with a troop carrier and convert the rear into a pop top camper. Thanks for the effort writing this up!

Hey Gary, what do you think of the weight of that engine compared to the 4.5?

Gotta love the sound of a v8.

And is that the crawl box hanging off the back of the transfercaser?

The Slee guys have now decided that they want to draw and laser cut out the parts for the mounts so the last couple days have been mostly measuring. This may mean that other 2UZs may find their way into unsuspecting 80 series trucks. In the mean time I have completely redone all of my hack wiring on the headlights, parking and turn signals with Weatherpack connectors and basically neatened up all of the chassis wiring. It has taken 2 days just to remove all of the rear mounted radiator stuff including lines, tubes, and wiring. Its going to be pretty cool to have a full bed again. Here is a shot with the engine set in the engine bay for mount mock up and new radiator measuring.

You might want to put a timing belt in that thing before you bury it...:lol:

I have searched the internet on the weights of either engine and cannot find anything. I am guessing that the 2UZ is maybe 100-200# less than the 1FZ. There is less iron there for sure and in a much tidier package. I am hoping that with the removal of all the bed stuff and the weight reduction in engine packages to be around 250# total. That would be cool as the truck weighs in at around 4k with the 1FZ and no top or doors. Yep on the crawl box. Its a Marks box and has been there since the beginning.

I did the timing belt, water pump, starter contacts, and new torque converter while I was in there so hopefully it will be as trouble free as the 1FZ was.
 
Perfect.

We have had very few problems with that motor. As much as you drive that it should last the rest of your life.

About the only thing is warped exhaust manifolds on early motors. What year is the motor?
