Whatever I keep will be a camper. The question is do I swap all the camper stuff to my other troopy for v8 power, power steering, air conditioning, and a nicer overall rig. The v8 will turn 33s, not sure the HJ45 will.

have you lost it?! keep the camper rig since you have kids and you of all people can find a way to tubo it. :grinpimp:

ah, ok. it sounded like it was a lot more difficult to do. you can still turbo the diesel.

Personally, I like the look of the tan one, plus v8 sounds good.

This is TreeRoot's 80 build. He is a member of RS and has done some nice things with his new 80. These are, of course, FJ40 style hood louvers and a retro grill.

TreeRoot was our trail leader on Metal Masher at last year's Cruise Moab (he was driving his 40 that day).

I like the hood louvers. I have considered installing some aftermarket louvers where you cut a hole in the hood and insert the louver. But these look so much more "civilized." Do you know did he do them himself or have a body shop do it? Neat idea...

He found a guy in the Denver area that had the special tool and the knowledge on how to do it. Details in one of his threads in the 80-Section. He didn't mention cost.

Thanks Mike. I checked out the thread on the Mud board. That's a cool idea. It looks like he's got some time and/or money in that rig. The louvers and the grill give the truck some personality.

He also replaced the headliner with cashmere or suede or something like that. Greg's gonna be hounding me to help upgrade his interior after he gets wind of TreeRoot's progress.

Just an update on the 3b into Dad's FJ-40 project.... :) I'm hoping to get the fuel control relay soon and the motor mounts and H55f crossmember should arrive from $OR within the next week. I'm aiming to do the swap in November (hopefully I can get 20 days of unpaid leave to make that happen).

Even if the fuel control relay/EDIC issue isn't worked out, the engine will run and drive just fine without them, as long as we'd accept having to reach under the hood to start and stop the engine. ;)

Damit Dan! you show off. Of course Jon has been doing some work on his, your are making the rest of us look bad. As far as Mike's comment of "watching paint dry", I have to finish watching the grass growing before I can commit more time to the 40.

I did a little work on the 60 recently. I actually did a little fab work. I installed the shoulder straps for the 3-point seatbelt retrofit kit. I was not lucky and the c-pillar had the holes but not the nuts to mount the belts. So I fabbed some nut plates out of 3/16" steel and Grade 8 nuts. Then I fished the plate up into the c-pillar and bolted the belt in place. It was really very simple. I spend more time making the nut plates than fishing and bolting.

nut plate 2.webp

And the final product:
upper bolt installed.webp
right belt upper.webp
left belt upper.webp

Very nice Marc! A 60 needs shoulder belts in the rear seat.

Wow, that looks nice!

Gonna have to do that myself in a few years.

Anyone that wants to help wrench in November is more than welcome. :) I should be back home Saturday the 8th in the evening, and Sunday the 9th I intend to get ripping.

  • Tub needs to come off
  • 2F needs a compression check (to sell it later)
  • 3B/H55f mounts and crossmember need to be mounted
  • parking brake needs to be added to the split-case

That's what I'm hoping to do on Sunday (9th)-Tuesday (11th). Then I'm off to work for a few days, and I'm hoping to have the 17th through the 21st free to wrap up the engine install.

Like I said: anyone that wants to scrape their knuckles is more than welcome. I'm sure I'll need help getting the tub off on Sunday the 9th.
