You realize your sig says putting back together yet here you are still taking things apart..... keep up the good work !

So, so true. I think I'm finally at the point where there isn't much to take apart anymore.

Turning a significant corner very very soon.

:p:cheers:

It's ok, again - no rush. I don't drink wine or whiskey, but I understand quality takes time. Thanks.

Cool - as long as you're ok with the timeline and cost then we should be gtg.

Don't worry, I know we never discussed cost but if your budget is such that it requires discussing then...

This guy put up a good fight. Couple days of applying heat and pb blaster then today a ratchet strap (to keep the crank from turning), good amount of heat and 15 minutes of off and on impact banging got it to finally let loose.

Timing gear and oil squirter look great, no concerns. Gonna clean up the gasket surface and then reinstall the cover with new seal and gasket!

Also painted the oil filter cooler contraption. If there wasn't the Relic Run this weekend then I'd likely have the engine reassembled and in the frame!

Do NOT use the factory torque specs on the timing cover bolts. Do it by feel - when the gasket just starts to squish, stop! I think we discussed, but just a reminder on my lesson learned.

Thanks for the reminder. I remember the specs being really light but even that's enough to fusarium the gasket?

Did you use any sealant?

I used Hylomar. The smaller bolts are really light, it's the 2 larger ones at the bottom that cause the real problem (at least for me).

Block painted. Machined surfaces were etch primed, then top coated with a satin black. Non machined surfaces were etch primed and then top coated with a hammered black.

I'd have this assembled and in the truck this weekend but I've got family and a wedding...we'll see how much time I can dedicate to the 40.

Absolutely awesome.

I was going to mention, but it looks like you're done, that instead of using high temp engine paint on exhaust manifolds, which is good to about 500 degrees, I use wood stove paint which is good to 2000.

Looking forward to seeing engine resting in the bay.

Thanks! The exhaust manifold is done in the 2k degree VHT paint...I had some left over from the previous 40 I did years ago. The intake manifold is in the 500 degree stuff. We'll see how well it all holds up.

Got all my oem parts laid out this evening for the reassembly...this is the fun part!

She's going back together bit by bit as I have time. Was all set to install the head and the damn thing isn't painted. My fault for not unwrapping it after bringing it home. I'll tape it up, wire wheel, degrease and paint tomorrow if the weather is decent.

Motor porn! Cant get enough motor build photos

Check your oil pan gasket... appears to be leaking diet coke at an alarming rate!

Looks great bro!

It's a shame you're going to wheel this truck and get that shiny paint all dirty ;)

Dirt should wash off and the truck wasn't perfect to begin with (previously rolled, tub slightly tweaked, etc.). That said, I still plan wheel it with a conscious effort to not beat on it...I'll likely have to break her in slow...
