Problem with my Axle

Ok, I just repacked a Bj60 knuckle and I'm learning some new things...

Also, my front end is clicking and popping...

So check this out, as I feel it's one of the top killers of a Toyota axle... Follow the process!

Alright, we all know most trucks had a hard life from previous lazy ass owners... I'm cleaning one up now that has grease fittings all over it... I guess the PO though you grease the piss out of the front axle rather than replace the swipe seals and axle seals...

So, the axle shaft seal goes... And now diff OIL is being introduced to the knuckles and mixing with the grease. It is in effect lowering the protective properties of the grease.

So you're washing the Birfs with a oil/ grease mix.

Any load and wear on them is magnified b/c a much thinner protection is being used on them. Also makes it harder for the swipe seals to do their job... And you have a leaking axle;)

Don't short out on this. A re-seal and re-pack are in order at the very least!

It's also a good time for FJ60 rotors and IFS calipers to.

It's called "Birf Soup" welcome to the game!

does it leak from the knuckle took some pics just found this today did help on what to do kinda lost on what happened still or what i need to buy

ok you can see i think its leaking from the bottom of that ball ,or maybe running down to it ,but just noticed the huge puddle. Its also all over the back of the tire too. Any advise on what to check and what i need to buy would be really helpful.

Hey your on GA TTora :p .Anyways tried to order a rebuild kit with wheel bearings, and two new better than stock chromoly birfs ,but the order would not go through  .So will call TG Tuesday i guess. Is it ok to drive it like this or should i do something so i can temperately drive it because its by daily and since it took over a month to get my ebrake am guessing this will be the same way

Yeah, that's me.... mud is a good resource too, I'm always learnin' something... but my primary hang out is the ga board.

If you can't get your order through on line call Marlin.

You need to get it stripped down and fixed purdy quick, that birf soup already mentioned can't be any good on your trunion bearings. And, if seals are bad your wheel bearings may be in the soup too.... besides, who wants to wheel in 2wd anyway? LOL

When I rebuild my truck knuckles I plan on trying out Bobby Long's new UHMW wipers and see how they do.

Good luck with it!!

Thanks for the help I will go with marlin ,but what about birfs. Is the better than stock birfs from TG ok. Dont have the money for longs. Also i tried the knuckle kit, and all i can do is add to the wishlist ????

but main question is it ok to ride like this for awhile? Will order parts from marlin tomorrow if i can, and is it ok to just replace 1 birf even if there different kinds, because am not sure what's in there now.

I don't think it will hurt anything to drive it, as long as you keep the hubs unlocked and leave the t-case in 2WD. You could even drain the remaining oil out of the front diff for the time being, just to get it to stop leaving puddles everywhere you park. Stop at the coin-op car wash and pressure-wash off everything before you start working on it.

That link is how to get the axle shafts out of the birfs, but to get the birf/axle out of the housing using the "Cammo" method;

Loosen lug nuts, jack axle up, remove tire.

Remove locking hub face, remove C clip from axle shaft, remove brake caliper.

Remove 8 bolts from the back side of the steering knuckle that hold the felt and rubber wipers on.

Loosen the bottom 4 nuts on the steering knuckle, remove top 4 nuts and steering arm, thread the bottom 4 nuts almost off, then grab the knuckle and tilt the top out towards you and pull the knuckle off.

Remove birf and axle shaft.

i NEVER ever touch the four bottom nuts on the knuckle.
just remove the upper arm, and it comes right off

I would NOT drive the truck! If it is a broken birf, depending on how it broke, it can lock up the steering at any time.

Well i started taking it apart ,but got stuck quick. There is a 54mm nut ,and i have no way to get it off. No were sells a socket that size any ideas advise would be nice and i still have to call marlin about that knuckle rebuild kit too.

wow man your alot of help just called sears and they had a 2 1/8 going up there right now i love this site lol

Well got the driver side birf out, and it looked fine. I was thinking it would be broke in half or something, but it all looks good so i started to drain the axle and take a look at the gears. Then i realized i have to pull the other birf out first. So i just called it a night have work tomorrow so its enough for today. Was hoping it was just the driver side birf ,but that would be to easy so will look at the other birf tomorrow . If its not broke then look at my gears, but have two questions

What should i look for with a broke birf is the shaft normally snapped ,or something more minor?

If my differential gears are screwed how much will it run me and were can i get them at?

you really need to look really carefully..........it may be cracked

ok will look at it better when i get home, but do you think its possible that my passenger side birf is broke. Even though its leaking from the driverside ether way will figure out tonight hope it only a birf .:meh:

You cannot go by the leak. The leak is more than likely age.The seals and want not fail over time. About your popping most naturally it is a birf but it dont have to be broke in half to make the noise. Just clean both really good and inspect.
The trunioun beraing can make a noise but I havent ran across that much.........maybe once in 20 years.

also really clean the lock in lock out hubs really good and apply just a little grease.........not a bunch

You need to replace both sides such as the bearings

seals..........dont foregt the inner seal. Buy the good wipers. Booby long is selling an awesome wiper/felt kit (and its just that).

The complete kit kit(front end service kit) will have the inner and outer bearings
inner bearings
gaskets

trunioun bearings
shims

then naturally it will contain the felts and what not.

I will get you a link of what a standard kit comes with.

I mean you are already buying the kit that comes with it all so why not do both sides?

Get some good moly grease........a tub

I dont know what you have boght yet..........here is an awesome mud vender...Kurt. Tell him what you have and what you need and he will hook you up............second picture down. This is what you need. Kit part # FA7590KWB

Also Kurt sells the Marlin inner seals.............the best inner seals around.
