So awhile back i was trying to flex out on a storm drain sticking about 4 or 5 feet out of the ground, and i was near the top when i hear popping noises. So i let off the gas and rolled back. Then put it in 1st and right when i start moving. About every half revolution or so it pops really bad. Feels like my axle is about to break in half. Anyways i unlock the hubs and it runs fine. Then like two weeks later (today) i figure would try to lock my hubs, and see what it does it sounded like my axle was about to fall in half. It went forward like a foot then kinda leaped back. Any idea what it could be and a easy way to check it? By the way its on a SAS 87 4runner with a 85 axle.

sorry i know this is a newbie thing but is there a easy was to check it

the chances of it being a birf is high.

You should go ahead and get the axle servce kit(for both sides) that includes bearings and seals and you may consider longfields or whatever replacement you can afford.

There really is not check other than removing it

In Gainesville GA, I saw a yellow fj cruiser with IH8MUD on the side of it the other day, and thought i would check it out. I signed up a while back when i was search for my runner. Sorry have not really been here much seems like some nice people. Within no time i had like 4 reply's and a good link here. Anyways i had just put a new 22RE long block in less than 4 weeks ago, and just got a tran Ebreak from TG. So money is tight might have to hold off on the birf i guess but is there any locals on here

well i guess i can jack it up spin it and see but not really sure right now am about to put some quick release pins in so i can get my doors on and off easy i will check then once aging am a newbie but is it possible to only replace on side or is it all one piece

you can just replace just one side but get a factory service manual

That link is how to get the axle shafts out of the birfs, but to get the birf/axle out of the housing using the "Cammo" method;

Loosen lug nuts, jack axle up, remove tire.

Remove locking hub face, remove C clip from axle shaft, remove brake caliper.

Remove 8 bolts from the back side of the steering knuckle that hold the felt and rubber wipers on.

Loosen the bottom 4 nuts on the steering knuckle, remove top 4 nuts and steering arm, thread the bottom 4 nuts almost off, then grab the knuckle and tilt the top out towards you and pull the knuckle off.

Remove birf and axle shaft.

Ok, I just repacked a Bj60 knuckle and I'm learning some new things...

Also, my front end is clicking and popping...

So check this out, as I feel it's one of the top killers of a Toyota axle... Follow the process!

Alright, we all know most trucks had a hard life from previous lazy ass owners... I'm cleaning one up now that has grease fittings all over it... I guess the PO though you grease the piss out of the front axle rather than replace the swipe seals and axle seals...

So, the axle shaft seal goes... And now diff OIL is being introduced to the knuckles and mixing with the grease. It is in effect lowering the protective properties of the grease.

So you're washing the Birfs with a oil/ grease mix.

Any load and wear on them is magnified b/c a much thinner protection is being used on them. Also makes it harder for the swipe seals to do their job... And you have a leaking axle;)

Don't short out on this. A re-seal and re-pack are in order at the very least!

It's also a good time for FJ60 rotors and IFS calipers to.

I'm sorta local but my plate is kinda full!

x2 what these guys said.... prolly busted a birf!!

Check out Missouriman's write up on here and just dive in and DO IT! :D
