Take a look at this link of best SUV's under $40K, and there is simply no way you're going to get an LC250 anywhere near that:

Even if Toyota could, they wouldn't, when comparing what else is selling after options for around $40K.

This is like that argument that the 250 and GX550 aren't up to snuff compared to the 200 series.

It's all apples and oranges arguments, and irrelevant because in 2025, with multiple factors at play, we can't gauge auto prices on the past. The game has changed.

I’m not sure if anyone thinks it at $58k is a bargain…

But @MRego is right that an even more bare bones would cost more due to assembly lines…

Now I am curious on what would make a 1958 bare bones enough to get it down to where it’s seen as a great deal…

2025 1958's MSRP at $56,700.

2025 'Land Cruiser' trim w/ premium package MSRP's at $66,070. Yes, that's about $10k more. A lot of money.

IMO, if the 1958 isn't a bargain, then there's no way that spending an additional ten thousand dollars (or more) for the upper trim and options IS a bargain.

Nobody here said under $40k.
The discussion is mid to upper $40k. I said, IMO this is what the 1958 brings as real value for our bucks and it should be priced there. If Mr. T. wants to charge me $57k-58k at least it should give me what a 2024 4Runner Limited had (which BTW had an MSRP of $49,940) plus the run-of-the-mill nanny tech available today in every other car.

….and those prices are all base, so yeah, once you have options you’re at or above $40k on all.

More applicable than the link for those under $50k too

$45K will get you a very nice, low-mileage GX460
I've seriously thought about a nice low mileage, pre second face lift GX460. I just don't care for how any of the 120/150 look. I know it's all subjective, I just don't care for them. I know there great, but they just don't interest me. I however love how both the new LC and GX look. One place Toyota absolutely nailed it.

Plus you’re getting a hybrid motor that gets way better gas mileage.
That's another thing that upsets me about the 250 LC. Let's face it, the fuel economy ain't great and the tank size is a joke. And it "requires" premium (even if we all know it doesn't). If it got 25mpg @ 70mph on AT 33's that would be one thing, but they don't even come close.

I agree, $58k for basic, albeit cool truck is expensive based on the value proprosition. $50K, I might consider, that would have to be the OTD. We don't have sales tax.
Even if I could get one OTD @ 50k with a 8.75% sales tax that's another $4,375 tacked on. I just can't justify it.

Once again Toyota was right. The stereotypical "I want a base bare bones LC" customer has either already bought their 1958 and are probably happy with it, or they are still dreaming, and/or making up excuses for why the 1958 missed the mark. "If only it had a manual transmission..."
I have nothing against hybrid's, but if Toyota offered a non hybrid (mainly to save cost and weight), they already offer that combo in the new 4runner and Tacoma and elsewhere other than the US in the LC, toss in the 6MT from the Tacoma (parts bin engineering, cost nearly nothing), toss on some steelies and make it a super stripper for ~$45k. I'd be hard pressed to not have one in the driveway. I know I'm in the 0.1%, but Ford brought back the super base Bronco due to demand.

Now I am curious on what would make a 1958 bare bones enough to get it down to where it’s seen as a great deal…
See above. Non hybrid, steelies and a 6mt for $45k. that should be enough to let Toyota still make some money.
If that's too much to ask, leave it hybrid, the 8sp auto, and ~48K MSRP.
Due to popular demand, Ford brought back the super stripper base Bronco in 2025.
I was very close to buying a base/2.3/7MT, but even with the hardtop the NVH is absolutely awful. I just couldn't do it.

Let's say the existing 1958 gets cut to $48k. But what happens to the pricing on the upper Land Cruiser trim w/ premium package? It obviously can't cost $20k more than the base, that would be difficult to justify. So it would have to come down in price accordingly. Which probably results in the same situation - 1958's sitting because the more well equipped trims are simply more desirable to the market.

$38k for a 2-door, steelie stripper anything is nuts. Especially with Ford build quality. It should be priced closer to $32-35k, basically compact car money.

And that's probably why my local small-towm Ford dealer has 12 sitting on their lot.

The very fact that this thread exists is a key indicator of how ****ed up the world is since biden and the china virus. Its an entirely new greed filled world out there. Good luck.
1 month later: “Now the world is ****ed because of Trump and his tariffs. Entirely new greed filled world out there. Good luck.”

Stripper models cost more in the long run…

My good friend grew up with the Ritchie Brothers (of Ritchie Bros Auctioneers. Google them if you don’t know). They were famous for saying “If it floats, flys or phucs, rent it”!

I want to put you two in “The Octagon” and charge money to watch what happens. :slap:

Someone needs to make a "Make Land Cruisers Great Again" banner....with the outline of a 70 or 80 series incorporated into it somehow.

I'd consider buying that as a T-shirt.

Finally closed on a LC 250 today after a month or so of looking for the exact specs the wife wanted. Had to drive 4 hours to pick it up but they came off their number $5k. Felt like a good deal, first time I have gotten a dealer down since COVID. Was nice to have a good ole negotiation with a dealer. Like the good old days. MSRP -$5k is a win in my book.

Good job nailing those stealerships. Which trim? Confess how much OTD? ;) Is it yours or wife's? I am doing a research project on how many dudes are buying the Prado 250 (especially the GX version) for the wives and replacing the old GX460s, which by my accounts are/were driven by suburbanite women in a proportion of 80%.
