I would love to eventually put a PTO winch on my fj55. I think at one time it had one on it just looking at wear marks on the bumper and the fact that the cover for the pto lever on the trans tunnel is missing. My fj55 is a 1971 but I swapped in a 2f and 4speed into it.

My question is is there a difference between pto parts for a 4speed and 3speed? also are there differences between fj40 pto and fj55 pto parts? if so what are the differences?

or am I just better off finding a 8274 and rebuilding it?

I know the three speed and four speed are different PTO units on the t-case (because I didn’t when I bought mine), but you can change out a gear that you would also have to track down. Don’t know the differences on the FJ55, I believe drive shaft is different.

I like PTO's on the front for working all day long. I spent hours on the PTO winching both up and down mountains with my duece and half packing a radio shelter and pullin a generator trailer. A snatch block was very handy along with my secret allen wrench shear pin.

I think the hydraulic winches are way lighter and simpler, yet can still work all day.

An electric on the back to pull you back out when the engine quits would be useful.

The PTOs from mid 1963 to 7/80 are the same. The difference is the PTO gear in the transfer. Three speed and some early H41 four speeds which were never imported by Toyota here had ten spline PTO gears. The H42 four speeds imported here are all sixteen spline PTO gears. The sixteen spline PTO were not in all transfer cases. Most had a spacer in that spot.

Drive shaft for the FJ55 are different. Those did not have the pillow block bearing mount to the radiator support. Instead the mounted to the frame side rail like all later PTOs.
The FJ55 also requires a extension on the frame. The bumper on the FJ55 is to close to the front crossmember to fit.

Pretty sure this off a FJ55 I grab the PTO winch off a 77 years ago. Shows the bracket that bolts to the frame.

You will note the PTO drive shafts are fabricated. My PTO setup was off a 3 speed, I made the longer drive shaft with the ends I had and a piece of tubing. The PTO shifter link is also longer on the 4 speed than the 3 speed, also easy to lengthen.

Of course there are differences, there are always differences with 55s...
I do recall that front frame extensions were needed on the 55s, some were being reproduced not too long ago.

The main difference between 3 and 4 speed transmissions is that the 4 speed is about 4 inches longer than the 3 speed, which places the transfer case that much further back. This results in longer PTO main drive shaft and shifter linkage.

The PTO boxes attached to the transfer case are the same for FJ40 and FJ55 models:

Just be aware, as pointed out by @rlong that the 4 speed transmission may not have the PTO drive gear and you need one to drive the PTO box.

The winch units seem to be the same for FJ40 and FJ55 models: (Two bolts attaching the rear winch mounting bar to the FJ55 frame are longer than the FJ40)

Your biggest hurdle will be acquiring all the other equipment (shown below), particularly any FJ55 only components.

As I remember the PTO driveshaft and PTO shift rod need to be lengthened 3 1/2". For the shift rod I used a rod from early transfer case high low shifter. Cut to the correct length and threaded it. Had the correct bends (or close) like the stock rod.
