From Cruiserhunter, "Ok so here is my contribution to the forum. This community has helped me more times than I can count and I'm sure that will be true for a long, long time.

Much Thanks to Archie and Rob(Chitown) with out both of these people I would not have been able to do this.

So my Power Steering Pump up and started leaking all over the place. It was groaning and giving me virtually no help while driving. so after advice from the forum I attempted to rebuild the pump with a kit from Cdan. Well, that failed rather quickly with the rebuilt pump leaking almost immediately.

So I bit the ~$300 bullet and got a brand spankin new Power Steering Pump From CDan. Here is the install:

Tools:
You really don't need anything extensive. Here is what I used minus, Archie's BFH and various long pieces of iron.

Nice compact tool set...what brand, where you get that?

update

it is finally done, every thing went back last thursday and it worked out just fine :bounce::cheers:.here is what i did,i finally got the p/s rebuild and i did have 3 small o-rings left over.i also cleaned the internal parts of the smog pump, lubed the rear bearings w/ wheel bearing grease and the needle bearings that rides the shaft which is connected to the fins, there is no gasket between the cover and the case thus making it prone to break down when fluid leaks from the p/s pump.the smog pump is a lot quiter now.also don't overtighten the belts could cause early bearing failure, rule of thumb is about an inch of deflection for every 12" of belt between 2 pulleys.

i did have an idea regarding the bolt near the exhaust manifold, although i wasn't able to do it due to time constraints and hard time finding the stud that i needed.i was going to replace the bolt with a stud,i would clean the threads in the pump and install a stud just long enough for it to stick out the bracket. the stud size is 10mm x 1.25 about an 1.5" long, lock washer and a nut.my plan was getting the stud far enough into the pump housing just leaving enough to get the nut and washer.not sure if it would work since i never got a chance to test it.:frown: just my idea to share w/ everyone.:D john

Hank thanks for getting the thread illustrated, get job.

Elbert, It's a husky pro and the greatest part about it is that it fits completely under the Drivers seat. It is snug and doesn;t move a bit. I got it on sale at home depot. There are pictures here:

Tom, I an idiot. I can barely feed myself. Just try and you'll learn so much and get a sense of accomplishment when you finally complete a job without creating another job. I hope I'm not the only one this happens to.

Good luck

Patrick

Patrick, I just though that maybe, that bolt that was too long that hit the manifold, could be removed by just loosening the power steering bracket. What do you think? You gotta agree that the toughest part to the doing the bracket removal was not removing it but putting it back together while trying to line up the bolts with that heavy bracket, much more difficult with one person in those tight spaces.
Patrick and I removed the bracket because we didn't know how many bolts were holding it up. Patrick actually had to smack it to release it from the engine.

thank you

just would like to add and say thank you to all your input inc. the pics.
hey tom don't wait for the pump to fail,it's a good time to get it all rebuilt before it wrecks havoc on your smog pump. john:popcorn:
