Has anyone actually repaired this problem ?

PS pump is making a knocking noise and the pulley is wobbling a bit. I thought the pulley was the issue and called Beno for a new pulley ($189), both he and CDan said it was just a pressed on pulley and was not likely at fault.

They both thought the problem was more likely the shaft the pulley is pressed on to...so, has anyone had this issue and fixed it.

And I know I need to just replace my old and leaky pump and be good for another 25 years but even with our Mud cost, it's $362 and right now I am trying to delay that. Besides, I think it would be fun to fix...if it's fixable.

Thanks, John

WHen I bought mine the pulley had a slight wobble to it, PO said it would throw the belt every once in a great while but I didnt want to risk it so I ran without PS for a long time. Happened across a good PSP from my local parts yard for $30ish plus the cost of the bracket (because you have to take the pulley off to get to 1 damn bolt). No idea the mileage on the replacement PSP but she is still going strong almost a year later.

There are rebuild kits out there and I have HEARD it is not a complicated rebuild you just have to be careful of the seals on the shaft as if you nic one then it will leak like a sieve.

The shaft runs in a plain bushing. If it is wobbling or noisy, the bushing is shot.
The bushing is a proprietary size, not readily available from motion supply houses. Toyota does not sell the bushing.

The fix is to manufacture & install a new pair of bushings.
Or buy a new pump.

Ok Jim, thanks.

Not good news but not unexpected either. I've heard that the main reason our PSP rebuilds often fail is because of an unobtainable 'bushing'...so this must be the one eh ?

At 1st I was hoping it was the smog pump making noise and then I could use your smog pump eliminator. You mentioned having someone make this bushing...any chance that you sell this bushing ?

I have located a used pump and pulley for $235, thinking that may be spinning my wheels when for another $150 I can get a brand new one.

Thanks for the info.

I hate to disagree with the likes of CDan and Beno (and maybe Jim), but I had a knock and wobbly pulley and I did replace the pulley and the woodruff key, it fixed the problem. My pulley is not pressed on, but it is held on with a nut and the pulley is keyed to the shaft. I suppose my nut had loosened up, allowing enough slop to ruin the keyway in the pulley.

I would at least take the pulley off and inspect both the pulley and the shaft to see where the wobble is coming from.

No, I do not have the bushing. I do remember reading on 'mud that somebody took their disassembled PS pump to a small machine shop and had them turn a new bushing out of bronze stock.

A reman PS pump is $79 from Rockauto. It will not have a anew bushing in it, but it will have new seals. If it works, great. If it is failed out of the box, at least you can get a warranty replacement or refund.

FWIW, I would just install a Sag PS pump and be done with this one crappy Cruiser part. That's why there are a couple of fresh Sag pumps in a box next to my 60. Unfortunately, neither one has jumped in the engine bay and installed itself yet.

Well 2mbb, maybe I mispoke a bit when I said 'pressed' as mine too is held on with a woodruff key. Where did you get your 'new' pulley ? New is $189 before discount and I found a used one for $135. Either way seems high priced for a pulley.

Mine does wobble but I can't find anything loose or any other reason other than the shaft...however, I haven't taken it off yet either. The noise/wobble started yesterday on my return from Death Valley. I worked the PS pretty hard for 5 days...already leaking and maybe it was just too much for it. Didn't notice it until the return trip home tho.

$79 from Rock Auto sounds good...real good. Just worried I will end up with what I already have...leaky, wobbley, noisey pulley. New sounds good, but $362 does not.

Thanks, John

2mbb, forgot to ask, when you replaced the pulley did you also rebuild the pump with a kit ? And if so, how'd that go and how long ago.

If my problem is the shaft/bushing a rebuild prob won't solve my issue. From Rock Auto a rebuilt unit AND a core charge (if mine is no good) brings their price up to aprox $150... Again, add another $200 and I have a new OEM. Decisions...decisions.

Thanks, John

I got my new pulley from either the dealer or SOR. And it wasn't cheap. I did eventually replace the pump but I don't remember if it was at that time or a different time. I will have to check my maintenance log when I get home.

Wow, I'm surprised you can't get one at Motion. I've taken in the weirdest stuff and they just mic inside. Outside & depth and match it

Yeah, it's a "not industrial standard" metric bushing. If it was 20mmODx16mmIDx10mmD, it would be no problem, but it's some fawked up 15.5mmID*.

*Don't remember exactly, numbers are for demonstration purpose only.

I guess if it was bronze , and close , and you knew someone with a machine shop , you could ream it out or cut it down but maybe not cost effective

Yep, unfortunately I am thinking new OEM is the way to go.

Thanks John

Sag pump ftmfw..all day without question.

I agree, Saginaw is the way to go. The Toyota ps pump is definitely a weak link with bigger tires. I fabricated a bracket in about a day, got the pump reman'd from orielly's for like $40 I think and bought the billet pulley from man-a-fre and haven't looked back. Plus when you do wear that one out you can easily rebuild them yourself with very available parts.

Can't do a Saginaw when you're smogged, correct? My pump is leaking at the bushing, but only when I try to turn while the tire is up against something.

Hey guys, I work in a machine shop with every cnc you can think of. Is there a demand for these input shaft bushings? Bushings wouldn't be to hard for me to create. I want to rebuild my p/s pump and will make a bunch of them if people are interested. If you have any more info on the bushing let me know.
