rag joint? i see it specified in the drawing in my manual ( same as SOR's pages), but ii cant ID it. i m ust admit, im a learn-as-i-go guy. this has got me stumped. could you point out my "rag" joint. and would it just tightn up all byu itself?

60s don't have the rag joint like the 40s. With the front axle up on jackstands and the engine running, does the steering feel ok or bound up? If it turns easily then I think your problem lies in the pump. If its tight, you might look into the steering dampener, tie rod ends or steering gearbox, steering shaft ujoints, etc. Does assist improve if you rev the engine up a bit? Try parallel parking in 2wd low range. I bet its the pump - unfortunately.

The shop manual showes a procedure and a tool to check the steering pump pressure. I wanted to test my last pump to confirm low pressure at idle but never bothered to take it to someone with the special tool. I got a new pump from CruiserDan. Its an improvement but not the over-assisted steering I was hoping for. Just for fun, I took apart the old pump to see what might cause the low pressure. I didn't have to go far. The rotor is supposed to be something like 0.001" to 0.004" shorter than the housing. With just the front plate off, I was able to measure a 0.025" gap on the front end of the rotor. No wonder it couldn't develop pressure. This was a rebuilt from Checker. I think it had a Cardone lable on it. HTHs

i as able to get the front end up just enought that the tires still scraspped a little, but i goota say, the wheel turned as easy as i think it should.
the odd thisng is, backing down the driveway, i was able to turn the wheel with one hand, feeling the assit, then when i staightend out, it became stiff.
it doesnt seem to be better at higher revs, either.
if i gotta replace the pump, im going OEM, f-it for a rebuild. this is the second one in three years

That seems odd - quick question - are your U-bolts tight? Does anything clunk when switching from reverse to forward?

Relay Rod End

Alright, SOR is calling it a relay rod end kit. See page 094-61 at www.sor.com

Have you adjusted this?

i have not adjusted anything, not disconected anything during the pump replacement.
everything was working fine, even the PS pump, escept it leaked most of the fluid out the front after about 15 miles or so
so you can see why im stumped, and think this pump is NFG
