Quick question for you all. I own a '99 LX470 that recently had the rack and pinion replaced. I brought it home and about 2 days later the power steering pump went out. Before replacing the pump I had the shop clean the filter (which was filthy and full of debris) and flush the system, but there was no pressure. After replacing the pump with a remanufactured unit, everything was good. I took it off roading a week later and the lost power steering again. I have it at the shop again and the filter is plugged and full of metal shavings, I'm assuming from the pump going out. We have flushed the system again and the ATF is coming out bright red. I'm wondering though, could there be something causing the pump to go bad? Have you heard of multiple power steering pumps going out like this before? The original one I replaced had been replaced by the previous owner about 2 years ago, which means I'll be on my third power steering pump in 2 years. Thoughts?

We has something similar on my son's 2000 TLC. One of the power steering hoses was falling apart from the inside, and dropping all sorts of debris into the power steering system. The black gunk would cause a valve on the pump to stick, and suddenly no power assist. Much hair pulling, (2) pumps, one rack rebuild, and (2) hoses later, we finally figured it out and got it resolved.

Thank you. I've wondered if debris could be coming from one of the hoses. We have already replaced one of them. I'll pass that along.
