I tried to replace mine. Would not cooperate so I just put a fixed universal black antenna on it. Works great! Only downside is I have two buttons on my dash that dont do anything and I have to unscrew it before driving through a car wash.

Yeah....that's what I'm doing. Going to put an AM/FM/CB splitter in. Where did you get the wrench to remove the nut on top of the fender? No one seems to carry them locally. I should have asked Walcott CB if they had one when I ordered my stuff.

Edit: I'll have to see if I can remove those buttons and score another blank fill piece to put in there.

Unless yours is different than min it is just a spanner wrench. Try a bicycle shop if you can’t find one. I just wrapped mine with a rag and used a pair of pliers. If you are going to do what I did you won’t need it again.

Here is a picture o what mine looks like mounted:

My truck had some paint work and the idiots did not remove the antenna when they did it (before I owned it) so yours will prob not have the ring mine does.

need to do this my self,

do you guys pull the whole motor assembly out of the car and take the bits of old antenna out of the assembly or do you try and work on it while its still connected to the truck, in other words working in the engine bay?
I did this. My white cable was broken and wound up inside the motor. I removed the motor, then from inside the engine bay removed the cover of the motor and pulled the broken white cord out. Put everything back together and then mounted the motor back inside the fender.

After that - turned on car, pushed antenna up button till it stopped, manually fed new mast in to hole and pushed antenna down. The gear in the motor grabbed ahold of the new cable and pulled it right in.

The only thing I ended up doing was trimming the white cord before feeding it down the hole. I'm not sure if it is necessary to do that but it was what I found worked the best for me. My antenna goes up and down now without any problems.

x2 on the rag and pliers idea. That fixture isn't in there very tight and it only took half a turn or so before I was able to remove it by hand.

Just an FYI, this is what the Aug.'96 and '97 OEM antenna looks like. Notice the "teeth" on the cable. The pre Aug'96 trucks came with a smooth cable in them.

i made the same mistake the first time around, was able to sell my antenna with in like a day though in the mud classifieds. this is the one you need.

this is the exact link to the white cord and the mast i bought from this site as well

i gave up for a while, but finally was able to find a little time, it actually was not that hard to replace. just take everything apart, install your new antenna cord (use the down button to pull the antenna cord in) then reinstall the motor on the car, and screw on your new mast, tighten everything up and your golden!

Weird thing with mine

I have a 93. The mast goes up and down fine with the exception that if you don't let off the button when raising it the mast doesn't stop when fully up...It just falls out of the base and flops on the fender. It will go right back in but I suppose one day I'll need to fix it.

i have a 96 with the smooth cord. the cable is fine and goes up and down but the last section of the mast is broke off down in the fender area. i have read the threads but unsure how to get at it. I tried to use needle nose to just pull at it from the top, didn't work. if i get at it from inside the eng comp. what do I need to take apart?

I'm looking for a "how to" on replacing the OEM power mast on a 97 LC. I can't find the FAQ and the Comcast link I found is broken.

I'm thinking this is a pretty common surgery. Anyone, have the recipe for me!

thanks,

jared

I must be overlooking it in the FAQ thread...does anyone have a link to a thread with pictures/instructions on removal of the factory power antenna setup? (I'm installing an all in one antenna).

Bump. Is the antenna access via the small hole in the engine bay?

Did you ever find the FAQ link? If not here it is. It's in the Chapter 4 Maintenance section.
Power Antenna Mast Replacement

Since I didn't realize that my LC was an early '96, I bought a mast with the "teeth" cable and it doen't work with my smooth cabled antenna.

So, PM me, I have an OEM antenna for sale if anyone wants it.

Sent you a PM.

Dan

For bicycles it is a Park Tool Spanner. There are several ends to choose from. This one works the best.

1997

Just replaced my mast on my 1997, got it from the Ebay guy.
My "cord" was broken off also, but there is plenty of room in the motor housing for the broken one and the new one.
I intalled it yesterday and it works perfect. You dont need to unbolt or remove the motor.
Just had to take off the spanner nut and pull the old mast out.
My fender grommet was messed up so I bought a new one along with a new nut. Here are the part numbers for those:

I just finished replacing the antenna mast on my 97 LX450… I bought the vehicle without the antenna mast, so I'm not sure if it is working properly as I don’t have a previous reference to go by.

Using the up button the antenna seems to extend fully, but using the down button the antenna retracts but seems to stick out about 3"... is this the normal down position?

If I turn the ignition or radio off the antenna retracts fully...

Yes, that sounds like it's working right. If the radio is on, the manual retraction will only take it down to the minimum height. You must switch to another source or turn the radio off for the antenna to retract fully.

If you are not obsessive compulsive, you don't even have to remove the remnants of the old gear cable. There is plenty of room in there for the new one and the remains. Takes about 5 minutes total to change the mast.

This is not necessarily true. It depends on how much of the old cable is left in there. My cable had broken towards the very end and most of it was left in the motor. When trying to add the new mast/cable, it would not reel all the way in no matter what. I had to remove the motor from its mounting position, lay it on the inside of the fender, open it up, remove old cable, regrease, and put everything back together, then reel the cable all the way in. If the antenna cable would release from the motor, then you could take the motor al the way out, and it would be easier, but it doesnt, so you have to replace it with it still connected and laying in the engine bay. Pretty much a pain in the ass for such a minor repair.

Thanks to everyone for the valuable information and special thanks to Dan for the link to the step by step instructions and pictures. After 4 beers and many profanities muddled under my breath I fixed my antennae mast in about 2 hours. Works like new and the wife is very happy. Thanks again everyone!
