Sorry for the delay responding…

The top’s not MDF, it’s made out of MDO. MDO is marine grade plywood that has a hard paper face on the exterior. It holds paint forever, and is real top quality plywood. This is the stuff that the highway signs are made of.

The only real down side is the weight. Man is this stuff heavy. I may try to make a heavy duty arrangement like the ones that ARE uses for their toneau covers. That way I can use a short throw piston that will give me more control for opening and closing.

I’ll post pictures of whatever I end up doing.

triler lid up

here is a pic of my frame and lid. It can hinge on either side. I can also lift it off and just use the trailer that is why I made the frame 4inches outside the box. An added benifit was the lids stays vertical for the loading of camp gear then i just shut it pin it and go.

That is really a great idea. I have never seen it done this way before.

Thanks for the idea

I got the Idea from looking at your posts. I liked the how yours lid was easy to construct but I wanted a wwII looking tarp instead of a lid. The way you hinged it made me think of an easy solution.. I like the way the tent comes of in one piece with the frame. Me and my 18 year old son can move it with out any strain. I am looking at some gas struts but I kind of like how it goes vertical and stays. It is not to hard to lift I just get on one corner and push it up it is not to bad to get up.
It is a nice set up I can pull it with my Rovers and my jeep. I know I don"t have a Toyota now but I have owned a few. The Toyota guys are aways one step a head of the jeep guys

Thanks for the idea.

Here are some progress pictures of what my son and I are working on. . .

If you guys have any cool ideas for a cooler/fuel can rack for the front, let's here 'em.

Looks great !!
For the front , Maybe triangulate the tongue and build up a platform.
You could also incorporate a storage box up there.

Cool!

Here's our setup, it's not much like what you guys have over there though.
It has electric brakes, 33"BFG mud to match the car, Q/S bed up top, full kitchen, 60lt water tank, shower etc. etc.

Yeah...nice trailer! There's a market stateside for that one!

My trip to Oz land inspired me to make my own like that with the drawers... not the canvas! :D

Aussies

The Aussies are light years ahead of us boys, light years. Google Aussie campers, etc. I have.
