Some pictures of my "cracked exhaust valve".

Actually, a "Burnt" valve. Got super hot, locally thinned at the seat area (a million reasons why, it was probably lean). Eventually, the heated exhaust gas eroded the seat interface and it stopped holding compression. No wonder #5 was only 20 psi.

My bet is that the smog pump caused this along with a tune issue. What's your guess?

Bonus points to anyone who can tell what field I work in from the style of pictures.

Put enough (or even not enough) miles on a FJ60 2F and it can eventually burn exhaust valves. Not caused by the smog pump. Burnt ex valves on a 2F are not rare.

More likely (but not definitely) caused by one of the ten thousand possible vacuum leak locations making the engine run too lean, and tight, not properly adjusted exhaust valves.

Welcome to the club. You've been initiated.

Did I mention that my intake manifold was cracked off at the ear and that explains my raised hot idle?

Also, have no history of valve adjustment. I went with Federal Mogul intake and exhaust valves along with Toyota Valve springs from @beno. I really only needed exhaust valves, but they were fair priced. so I did all of them..even if they come from that C country.

I think I'm ready for the next 100k miles.

In for the bonus points: STEM field? The language in the description makes me think engineer? Or maybe machinist?

Very close.

Metallurgy or metallography?

Ding Ding Ding.

Forensics.

A side role of mine.

ZOOM IN....ENHANCE!

Seamstress

Only when I tear my pants leaning over the hood of my truck.

I'm the blue collar side of failure analysis and forensic investigation, in the role of an Engineering Technologist. I'm going to make a cross section of this valve for a desk top piece and post some pictures of the micro structure of the valve. A $10,000 approach to why a $30 valve broke lol.

Looking forward to the photos!

This is "Ding Ding Ding". I had a leg up in the bonus round because my son, a Geologist by education, is a Technologist in a metallurgy group at a well known Government R&D facility. We talk a lot about the current research projects he's supporting. In my former life as a structural engineer I had a lot of interaction with metallurgists, especially w.r.t. high strength low alloy (HSLA) steels - in the two fields I spent the most time in during my career we were especially concerned with the behavior of steel structures in extreme conditions and/or high consequence of failure applications (offshore oil and gas platforms and field testing of high explosive devices). I can appreciate the amount of knowledge required to be proficient in this field. I wish I knew more because I'm about to embark on some Land Cruiser related welding projects.

How long did this take to develop a full on burnt valve? Had a massive intake leak on mine and drove it like that for a few blocks before I noticed fire coming out of my muffler. Just did a full resto and this was on the first test drive post rebuild. Needless tosay im reinstalling manifolds again lol
