How she rides with the 5.29s? Is power back? Better than stock? How bout fuel "economy" with 5.29s n 37s?
Good looking rig.
Thanks! With the 5.29's I'd say yes the power is back, and slightly over geared. She definitely turns some RPMs on the highway, but I don't need to go faster than 70/75 anyway. What I do notice, is my rig can be empty as a welfare wallet, or loaded like a freight train and it still has the same power characteristics with acceleration and power. I try (very hard to do with a lead foot) to keep it under 3500rpm when driving around town, and I pull into traffic that's moving, all the time so acceleration is a must, and I'm very very excited about the performance. If it was in 35/36's I'd probably have gone with 4.88's, but I plan on going up to a 38" tire next time around and I'd rather be prepared, scouts motto! Feel free to ask questions if you have them, yourself and others, and I'll answer them best to my knowledge, experience, and expertise I have in the matter. I'm far more experienced in the 80's mini trucks, but learning fast with the 80 series!

Thx for the info as I am planning on 35s. How bout fuel?

As said above 4.88's are more your speed for 35's

5.29's are even low for 37's and spin high RPM on the highway sucking down fuel. 5.29's are really intended for 38's to 40's range to get into the sweet spot.

Lots of tire / gear calculators

Agreed with above. My fuel consumption isn't as bad as AWD and big tires, as I've done the part time kit and the diff gears. I'd say the quotes of much better fuel economy with the part time kit are false. Yes, its a little better, maybe 2mpg at best, but it'll take years for it to pay for itself. I did the PT kit to save wear and tear on the front end. I figured it wouldn't hurt and any improved mileage was just a plus in the long run. The 5.29s are where I'm happy, loaded with gear and passengers it still accelerates like stock or better.

Had a local shop, Califab, here in Sacramento bend and weld up some rear corner protection, and I had to change the location of the tailpipe, so I changed the exhaust tip and tucked it up under the truck better. Here's a quick shot of it from his Instagram page, just hit a thousand likes!

I'll take a few more in the next few days as I'm going to build the mudflap hangers/disconnects, paint the tubing in the above picture, and spray some bedliner in the rear wheel wells to help combat road noise, especially when it's raining. Check back in a week and I'll have more up!

Talked to my buddy at the dealer, whis been an import tuner for 30+trs, and he mentioned a simple setup to get more airflow. Engine compartment heat isn't a concern, and there are so many negative Nancy's on here, I said fxxx em', I'm doing it anyway! As for the first drive, it has more pick-up through the mid range for sure! The bracket is temporary for now, thought i had more strips of aluminum but i thought wrong...

Marlin T-case gears are in and working great! Kind if a pain in the ass job when ya don't have a hoist, halfway between a sitting and laying down position. Couldn't have gotten it done without my good buddy Jeff! Drove it down to my local liquor store last night in low range, had to pull over (quiet, residential streets) to let a couple cars go by, it's lower than i expected with the automatic, feels just right! Next up, more lights, CB and PHH!

Sweet.
You will like them even more on the trail.
You also have 5:29s also correct?
If so since you have had Yota's with dual case etc. What is your thoughts? Do you think that 5:29s & Tgears will be enough for going down step hills on 37s?

I don't think anything will compare to 4.88's, dual cases and the rear case having 4.7's, but with driving it around a bit in low, it seems that it will be plenty enough to control the 37's. My old rig(pickup with mentioned gearing above) had 38.5 swampers on it with the single stock case and 4.88's before I got the adapter and rear case, so that was the biggest night and day difference ive ever felt! But in reality, it'll take a few steep hills before I know for sure. If I wasn't on a compression wrap with a big leg wound I'd already have been to prarie city and tested it out! Here's my leg as of yesterday!

And the wrap...

That leg looks much better... your almost there.

I was in the same spot almost a year ago, same wound in the same graft. Now I have a doctor willing to go into my knee and fix what's worth fixing, but until then the swelling is constantly there, and playing hell on my recovery.

Had a thought. This is random as all hell, but I believe I'm thinking on a keyboard (out loud so to speak) as I've been thinking about my old rigs and the age, power, mileage and other contributing factors. The fj(z)80 and it's big butt weighing in nearing three tons, and having the 3F heartbeat is very compatible to my 80' pickup with the 20R. Not completely gutless, but no powerhouse by any means, when accelerating in a moment where it's needed leaves you feeling like the old girl is dependable, but not the hottest thing on the block. Actually, rather slow against 98% of modern autos and trucks. The 20R I owned was flat as a pancake for an engine. It could be removed and mounted to a 48" bar with a sharp blade, and 14" chainsaws would laugh at it. My 3F was a sloth when I first drove her around the block. Almost had that same feeling. I've done 5.29 diff gears as it's on 37's, the part time kit, open element air intake, downpipe (exhaust, non turbo) with high flow cats and muffler and all new pipe. I hope to tear the head off in 60k mi or so, and I'm thinking I'll do a slightly better camshaft at that time, and some headwork beyond stock. At that time I'll probably put in a tuner and screw around with the fuel a bit and see if I can get some more out of it. Otherwise, unless going full blown custom rebuild, or an entire engine swap, these things really are slow! Guess it's a losing battle in a sense, I sure hope the cam and head work do the trick. I can't go too crazy with that though as our CA smog laws are tough as we know. I already have to run premium fuel as the timing chain is old and stretched a bit, so cheap gas and just the right amount of throttle give it an either detination knock or a combo of that and some wrist pin noise/knock. I even went with the 5.29's and it's a bit of a help. Yeah I have a bit of suspension sway that soaks up some response that could be taken as pep, but I'm pretty bummed on the size of this engine and the performance, and again, it's much better than when I got it. Sorry, I guess this is the fjz80 version of having the blues. Guess I'll just baby it to 250k and hope the internals help this thing move! The full width axles down the road with steeper gears will help it a bit, but then I'll have even bigger tires! :D Ohh the joy of finding the happy place! A friend that is going to dive into the computer and do the tuning said a Supra engine swap is much easier than expected, but along with extensive tuning and the need for a better suited torque converter, it's not too bad, and an idea for down the road. Cheers guys n gals, have a great rest of this weekend!

Some deep thinking and philosophical speak if I don't say so. When the 1fz was designed it was cutting edge and had jaw dropping smoothness. Compare it to the same era engines that were in blazers and Broncos. They were rated at just over 200 hp and if they made more torque it was minimal and possibly negligible.
The only time I curse my 1fz is when I'm loaded down above 6000 feet and need to accelerate quickly which is a very small percentage of total driving time. Our rigs were purposely designed for reliability and longevity before excitement.
You have smog legal high flow cats?? Who makes these?
