A year-old update that I forgot to post about when I did it:
As was predicted early in the thread, the plastic bowl started cracking and deteriorating in spring of 2019, enough to cause a very slight vacuum leak. I purchased a replacement catch can and simply used the bowl, this time I used a straight tap and large head stainless cap screw with thread sealer and an O-ring. The first plastic bowl with the NPT plug I tapped in before still lasted just shy of ten years before beginning to fail, so we'll see how long this bowl lasts. I think no matter how you tap and plug it, it'll still only last about that long if you build one based on this thread.
