I bought a parking brake rebuild kit and am having some difficulty getting it installed correctly. I've looked at the FSM but it's not a lot of help since all it shows is an exploded view diagram and lists the sequence of assembly. I can't for the life of me figure out why my parking brake shoes are off center to such a degree that the drum won't slip back on. I've got the adjuster set to the bottom setting and I can see that the portion of the adjuster nut that protrudes from the back side of the backing plate is touching the side of the opening. There's no more room for it to move and I am at my wits' end.

Can someone take a look at these photos and spot the problem?

is the drum and shoe interference on both sides or 1?
what is odd is it looks like the backing plate is upside down. the adjuster should be at the bottom. looks like a 55 backing plate spun 180 degrees.

Backing plate is upside down as handbrake cable should be at the bottom as well as the adjuster

not certain on being able to use the 55 backing plate. as noted the 55 cable comes in from the right side and the 40/45 should come in on the left side.

As others have noted, 55s have opposite side parking brake cables. Might be possible to make it work with a longer cable and re-routing...probably easier to find a 40 backing plate

Well, I for one, would rather have an old factory painted backing plate that works than a powder-coated one that does not...
