Have you guys been up to the Defense Mine before? It was one of my favorites, but there is a thread on Pirate that says that part of the mine collapsed and that the trail is closed.

Defense mine trail - Pirate4x4.Com Bulletin Board

One of the last post to that thread on the 29th;

My 2 Clubs led the trail both days at PVD. No one said anything special about Defense Mine. Same report from the Oct prerun.

BTW - there has been a collapse at the 2nd level in the mine. You can still crawl through but not as comfortable as walking. Makes you thing about future collapses!

Steve
Looks like it is open.

I'd love to do the trail but I'd like to do it in the 40.

I haven't been, in fact just a few months ago (t-day weekend) was my first time in that area. I looks like the Defense Mine road, might be worth looking into...

I think that the 100 could make it but you might kiss a rock or two along the way. I haven't been there for a while though and the guys on Pirate said that it is much more difficult now so who knows. If you take the 40 you need to go to Isham Canyon. :D

I just put this on my calender, I'll try and meet you guys up there.

(that is, if y'all allow Kalifornyuns on your runs)

:D:D

No problem, you are bringing the diesel 80 aren't you. :D Looking forward to checking that out.

See you there.

I invited the wife to come along and ease her worries, but she's not interested in "Death Valley". I mean, you have to admit that the name just conjures up bleak scenerios.
I've created a real :princess: who won't wheel with me anymore.

Oh well, February is almost here and my iPod adapter should be on UPS tomorrow.

My wife loves it, she actually suggest trips down there. Take a lot of pictures to show your:princess:, even though they don't convey the feeling it might get here interested for next time.
Edit:
Here are a few from some of our trips

One of the Blotchers just sent this, thoguht Id pass it along.KeithPleasant Canyon --------------------------------------------------------------------------------I saw this over at another message board. Remembering someone over at the BB Cruiser board talking about a trip in Feb up Pleasant Canyon/South Park Loop.http://www.panamintvalley.com/forum/...1060&start=195Louie used to work at the Ballarat Store. I've met him a bunch of times. He now lives in a cabin up in Pleasant Canyon. The message was sent via amateur radio (packet) to a guy in Ridgecrest. What is sort of cool, is that a while back I was sending emails to that guy in Ridgecrest, whose computer would automatically re-send the message via packet radio to Louie. Louie never returned my messages, as he didn't know who I was. Later I saw him at Ballarat and explained. His response: So that was you?!I was also out in DV over New Years, and the Panamints got hit again hard with snow. A back-up route to the loop is HIGHLY recommended.

No problem Keith, everything we do is fluid in motion. :D If the weather is too bad for a south loop run we will adapt and overcome.

No...actually we typically just put it in low range, lock all 4 and push on :D.

Bring your snow shovel and chains just in case. We don't have a reputation for turning around :bounce:

from: reno, nevada to: 36.07696756,-117.215257193 ("Panamint camp on Suprise Canyon Road") - Google Maps

Ok, that should be the directions to camp, yeah, I used my mad 'puter skills. I just put camp in the general area, we can decide on the final spot when we get there. Hopefully that works for everyone. Mainly it is for the Lat and Long of the area, so that anyone can go to google earth or plug it into their gps.

Also, ignore the first part, I just put in Reno as the start destination. Google Maps has you turning onto the north end of Indian Ranch Road (which is what we did when we went) or for the travel trailer people, stay on the Trona road (paved) and take the turn off for Ballarat, when you get to Ballarat, turn left (north onto Indian Ranch Road) and then turn right onto Suprise Canyon Road. There is a sign post for Suprise Canyon Road

The Ali's will be joining you folks and we're hoping to be in the Saline Hot springs a day or two earlier. I just can't get enough of that washboard road :D We're looking forward to seeing everyone and meeting some new folks there.
