Just a through degreasing and media blast then paint the outside surface only. I used a red, but I think home depot dosent have that color anymore.

Ok I got lazy and dropped them off at the powder coating place. There was a 3 week wait and I was lazy. Not bad results though.

Ok maybe this should be a different thread but here goes. I've reassembled the hubs off the truck. I screwed down the cover to the body with everything all set up just for a test where "free" = should roll freely with my finger rotating the back of the thing and "lock" = should NOT roll freely with my finger. All seems well except a few times when I go from "free" to "lock" and do the spin, there is some sort of additional movement (almost unnoticable) and THEN a click into place. Again the movement is so slight but the sound I can hear (it's just a click AFTER I try rotating the hub through the back). Is this just merely from the splines not lining up perfectly when I went from "Free" to "lock" and just clicking after some very slight rotation or is there a problem ?

I don't think it is a problem, might read a thread about rebuilding them if you think something is wrong.
I am waiting for some genius that makes cup holders from painted hubs, maybe in page 8.

Hit mine with a scotch pad and then some soapy water and a toothbrush. Primed and painted them and they feel like they will last. In retrospect I could have cleaned more of the old paint off of em. Be careful you don't lose the little ball in the dial when taking them apart! I had to look for mine for 1/2 hour.

New OEM hardware in the mail too. These clean hubs really make the rusty hubcaps pop too!

That metallic paint (gold for the center dial) is what I always had the morst problems with.

Let us know how the self-etching primer works. I think I would have had success with the aluminum primer, at leadt it seemed to hold before I decided to re-do them again because I out way too much gold paint on.

I like how you got the "free" and "lock" letters sanded off. Looks nice!

As far as the gold paint, they feel really nice and bonded. Time will tell though....

Really impressive - thanks for detailing your process and attempts on this - I've got same project coming at me in future, so this is really helpful.
