Hi Folks-

Up for sale is a 4 speed with 96k miles on it. It's the Ozzy one with a lower first gear than the North America Spec. I've driven this transmission before it was pulled. It doesn't make any noises and shifts cleanly.

If you have a FJ60 or FJ40 from 8/80-10/85 it's a direct swap. You use your old shift plate and shifter ( I can supply, but you'll need to let me know)

$500 obo.

I'm located in LA and will ship or deliver to Surf n' Turf.

Thanks

Seth

PS The splitcase/fairy does not come with it and is already sold.

Is this a different spline than found on a 78'? or bolt pattern?

Will it fit directly in a 12/79 FJ40? If not, do you know what is needed to make it fit? Thanks!

Nope Chris. For starters, the 81 and newer use a 19 sline output shaft, the 1980 and older a 16 spline. That's why Seth was specific about the application.

Seth,

I might need this...check out this application and tell me if I'm missing anyting here:

I'm converting my 88 FJ62 to a 4sp w/ a Marlin Toybox. I bought an 87 FJ60 parts rig which gives me everything I need for the 4spd swap but Cruiserdrew pointed out that the 86 & 87 4speeds are longer than the earlier models...something about making them the same length as the H55's.

So he suggested that I use all the parts from the 87 including the split case but get an 85 tranny. Now with this one I'd get the added benefit of the killer low gear. So will this combo work?? (3FE+87 Bellhousing+Ozzy 4sp+H42 Toybox+87 splitcase)?? Georg??

Hi Brett-

I don't know anything about Marlin's toy box or it's length.. I can and will call Marlin and ask, if you want me to.

My 4spd is not the same length as the later 11/85 + tranny's, for the 60 series. (just wanted all potential buyers to be clear on that). If the direction given to you, was to use an late 85-87 4 spd, like the 5 spd in length, this is not the tranny for you.

I just swapped this 4spd, for a 5spd. I had to change the drive shaft lengths.

Spector Off-road sells this exact unit. You can see the application and fit here: Tranny info

Mark, Georg, peanut gallery, comments?

Here's a pic when it was in a moving land cruiser.

if i have this right.
the split t cases are the same from 8/80-1/90
the 4 speeds are the same for all the years of the 60 series.
what is different, is the the 4/85-8/87 tranny&transfers have a spacer in between them, to make up the length of the 5spds.
get rid of the 3extra parts(two spacers and a bearing) and i believe that the later cases and trannies will fit in the earlier 60's without having to mess with drive shafts.

this could very well be incorrect, and your milage may vary, blah blah blah.

As Seth alluded to, it's more than just the fact that the tranny is longer with the adapter housing.................THE TAILSHAFT on the 85-87s IS LONGER TOO. Mounting bolts too.

What I have NOT tried is bolting the 85-87 t-case to the 81-84 tranny. Seems like it SHOULD work, provided that the seller of said tranny [hint, hint] were to offer you the SHORTER bolts that came out of the split case along with the tranny.

brett.
since you plan on running a toy box behind it you really need to ask marlin if they offer the proper adapter for the "short" 4spd but make sure you inform him of the proper spline count, although i'm sure that'll be one of his first questions to you.
mark is absolutely correct, not only are the adapter plates on the later 4spds longer but the mainshaft is longer as well and so are the bolts to mount the t-case to the trans. the bolts can be purchased from toyota at a reasonable price. mudrak buys them all the time when he does the 5spd swaps.

talk to marlin and go from there. lemme know if there's anything i can help you with.

Hey if the buyer needs shorter bolts, I'll gladly include new OEM bolts (if they are availble) for the buyer. If not, I'll work to make the deal good from my end. As I can't find the original bolts. I think they went with the Fairy when I sold it.

I spent some time reading Brantley's write up on his Toybox install

http://www.realcruiser.com/crawler/

He used his late model 4spd but they removed the spacer and replaced the output shaft with the shorter 10 spline shaft to fit the toybox....Seth, does this ozzy 4spd have a 10 spline output? If so, seems like this should work for sure
