Sup everyone I made a thread like this on my last deployment and got a lot of great input! Just wanted to kill some time and get everyone's opinions and hear about it if you tried the same thing I'm thinking of doing or just have a better option.
Well I have a stock 1987 4runner 5 speed and it's my DD runs great! There's a few things I would like to do...

I already have a 4" pro comp lift but I'm leaning towards BJS with chevy 63s in the rear.
I'm not sure but I feel like with all that lift and tires the I'd have to move up in gears in the diffs.

Paint... So I'm kinda stuck between trying a bed liner type paint (rhino liner, duraback) and just doing a rustolium paint job. Anyone had any issues with weather tearing the paint up quickly or fading.

Exhaust seems fine don't know much about upgrading it or the engine itself any advice would be greatly appreciated as well as anything else that would be helpful to get the most life out of the truck!

Thanks everyone if you have build threads on your trucks id love to read them great way to pass time out here!

I actually took them off because I slipped off them one day last summer!

I'm really hoping that some of the guys in my unit can help me with making my own sliders and maybe try to make a front bumper deep down I want to do an exo cage or at least a cage inside for my family.

Here she is after they came off

Do rear locker and call it good. I had an 87 on 31's and a rear locker.... I was amazed at what it did in stock trim.

Love the look as it is! Refresh on the brakes is always where I start any project. Once that is done then look into suspension and trail armor. Seems like you are on the right path.

Is there anything special that should be done besides new pads and resurfacing the rotor if it needs it?
I've never really done much brake work besides that

A buddy of mine has been helping me with junk yards I really wanna find a elocker I can take out of a newer truck and implant it into mine when I get to Colorado Id just put a spartan locker or aussie but from what I understand talking to other people that could cause problems in the snow

I upgraded mine to the 4big piston v6 caliper type with the matching double diaphragm booster and MC. Best mod yet. I did mine for $120 plus new pads. You just need to trim the back plates a little for the bigger calipers.

I have a spartan in the rear which works well off road and OK in the snow, but it is very annoying on a DD truck. If you have the funds and time do a selectable locker in a DD. The auto locked rear end is "fun" on the ice...

First thing I. Did to my 88 yota pickup was basic tune up stuff. Flushed rad, plugs, plug wires, pcv valve, air filter, fuel filter. Your fuel filter is a pain to get too, so to make it easier to change later on you can mount it with a self tapping screw on the passanger fender well. The hoses are plenty long enough.

I may have to look into that I'm sure I'll start wanting to do everything possible now (thank you taxes!) haha

I'm setting money aside to try and get everything I need to put a elocker in the rear for now just because I'm not sure where I'm going to go with the IFS or SAS

Looking forward to getting alittle put of control on the ice!

I think that's where I'm gonna start at least with most of that when I get back so it will be nice and fresh. I'll have to check it out I've never changed the fuel filter before guess I'm in for a supprise haha

and does anyone have any advice on if there's anything I should look for to make ire everything is running alright or common problems after a truck sits for a year without starting?

Put some lucus injector cleaner into the fuel tank. That's what I did to mine after it sat for almost 2 years. I tried some other fuel cleaners, but had the best luck with the lucus stuff. But make sure u have another fuel filter sitting around, because after u put the fuel treatment stuff in ur gas tank, you'll be surprised what comes out of there and gets into your filter. Oh and for sure a new thermostat and rad flush. Especially if its been sitting for a year. Good luck with ur runner!

Thanks I'm gonna have some work set out for me that's for sure haha!
Did you just run that one tank of gas before swapped the fuel filter?

Anyone have any suggestions on getting the most MPG out of a 22re? I got like 17 driving around the city so I think I'm about where I should be just wanna be sure.

I actually put a new filter on then put the injector cleaner in with a full tank of gas. Then after the entire tank was about gone I filled up again and swapped in a new filter. U probably don't have to do it the way I did, but the filters were only 15 bucks, so I figured why not. And 17 in city driving sound pretty good to me. That would put u into the 20s for highway/freeway. For gas milage, new air filter, plugs, and wires. And a new distributer cap and rotor. Best and easiest way to get better performance and gas mileage out of your rig. I like your runner btw.

It would be interesting to see what all gets caught in that thing after a year I sitting! Especially if the filters are cheap

Glad it's not doing I bad on mileage though just wanna make sure it's running alright.

Not sure if this is an issue or common in older trucks but I think before I left It seemed like it was burning oil I had an oil change an then like a week and half later had to put another quart of oil in it. Didn't notice any leaked and kept it filled up till I left.

On the shopping list so far I have
-spark plugs
-spark plug wires
-k&n air filter
-brake pads
-Chevy 63 swap kit
-ball joint spacers
-LED dash lights
-paint job (considering monstalinner)
- new tires

Thanks she's a work in progress like they all are but I'm hopping to get her close to a good family truck when I get back!

Really hate to be that guy but looks like were selling the 4runner... Can't say it's the worst thing as it's just to buy a newer one I'm hoping we find a solid 2000 4runner limited for my wife to drive in the winter in Colorado and it be a little more comfortable for her and our son.

Thank you so much for all the advise this far I love the 1gen 4runner crew on mud you guys have been really helpful and it means a lot!
