Side terminals are not designed for the power draw a winch is capable of.
 
Thi sis how mine is set up. It's under my seat in the 40. Since this pic I've hooked the other one up. Runs through a marine 500amp continuous battery switch. And yes I winch with them. It works fine for my application. I like being able to manually switch between batteries.

Do they just not have enough lead connecting them or what? I figured they were connected to the top terminals by lead inside the battery. If it is smaller strip inside, then I understand.

I've seen a lot of winches connected to side posts. Just wondering what would happen if the winch was trying to pull too much amperage.
 
peesalot, majojo4, GLTHFJ60, and Dell, I'm glad to hear you are all pleased with your Optimas. Dell, I'm also glad to see you are using an isolator on dissimilar batteries. '74 UA FJ, as Mace suggested, our side post terminals are more than capable of handling the relatively-short burst of energy used to start a vehicle, but because winches typically require high current flow for longer periods of time, the top posts offer a more robust and direct connection to the battery.
