Hello from north Mississippi,
Just purchased my first FJ40. 1976 with 4 speed. I’m going through it and changing all the fluids, oil, etc. I have a Haynes manual and the Toyota repair manual. I can’t find anything about the transfer case or transmission as far as simply changing the gear oil. I looked online too and all the videos I find look different from what I have. I trying to make sure I’m draining and filling to the correct specs but the transfer case is so greasy I can’t tell for sure which is the fill plug. I have pics of what I would assume is the fill and drain plugs but I need expert advice. One is the trans and other transfer. Thanks for your help in advance.

Looks nice.
Gear oil in tranny is special so to speak for not eating brass syncro's. Seal between tranny and transfer goes bad and oil pumps up from transfer to tranny. Bypass hose and use same oil in both is the cheap answer.

I think your drain and fill locations are correct. All would be clearly labeled in the manuals.

If it wasn’t explained to you, if the shaft seal between the trans and transfer case leaks the oil in the transfer case migrates into the trans, overfilling it and dropping the oil level in the transfer case migrates. If when checking, remove the fill plug for the transmission first. If it runs out (overfull) you now know why. The hose kit connects both fill plug openings, the transmission being the higher of the two, allows the overfill to return to the transfercase where belongs!
