Got back to working and sorting my 1980 FJ40 and I feel something is amiss regarding my leaf springs which are Old Man Emu’s. I feel the fronts seem / look too long. Here are the dimensions and configurations.

Passenger Side Rear - 4W17 on rear of spring by shackle , paint O with arrow on front part of spring pointing toward frame mounting point, front length is approx 16” from frame mount bolt to axle shaft, rear length is 20.5” from shackle bolt to axle shaft.

Driver Side Rear - 4W17 on rear of spring by shackle, no markings ( arrows, +, 0), front length is approx 16” from frame mount bolt to axle shaft, rear length is 20.5” from shackle bolt to axle shaft.

Passenger Side Front - 9AN17 on front end of spring by shackle, paint arrow on rear side of spring pointing toward frame mounting point, front length is approx 23” from shackle bolt to axle shaft and rear length is approx 17.5” from frame mounting bolt to axle shaft.

Driver Side Front - 9AN17 on front end of spring by shackle, paint arrow on rear of spring pointing toward frame mounting point, front length is approx 23” from shackle bolt to axle shaft and rear length is approx 17.5” from frame mounting bolt to axle shaft.

It really seems to me that the front leaf springs seem too long as they are almost to the front bumper which doesn’t seem right ( Yes the front shackle also needs to be reversed as they are installed incorrectly).

Are these leaf springs part numbers correct for an 1980 FJ40 …. Especially the front ?

I have a ‘67 with a 4” OME lift. The only numbers I can still read on the front leafs is a ‘4’ near the front shackle. Is it possible that someone put the back on the front? That does look a bit long. The anti- inversion shackle is damn near making contact.

So this is what I found online …. These fronts dang sure seem too long but it says it’s the correct part number

4W17 is an Old Man Emu (OME) part number for the Rear leaf springs on a 1980–1984 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 [2.31, 2.51].

9AN17 is the Old Man Emu (OME) part number for the Front Driver-Side (Left Hand) leaf spring on an 1980–1984 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40. [1]

All leaf springs will have an arrow marked on the top of the spring. The arrow is meant to point towards the fixed end on the frame opposite of the shackle.
