Okay, Now I'm Completely Convinced: ALL Original HG's Are Actively Failing!

I might be one of the first to do this as a PM. I'm now at about 80k on the second gasket. With some encouragement ($$$) from others, I might be persuaded to pull this gasket and see how it fares after say, 100k.

Yep, you prolly were the first or one of the first, yer a wise man.

Exactly why I wrote I was only echoing what those wiser than me: Robbie, Rick and Dan have tried to tell us for a while!

Damm, this is depressing to many hg threads remind me of my pending hg pm. A local shop quoted me $2000 for everything, wondering how much Robbie would charge if I flyed him down.

This pretty much guarantees Robbie long term employment! This is not exactly the type of Toyota reliability that I was looking for when I got the 80.

The problem is the amount it costs to repair and the difficulty in finding someone capable of doing it right. I guess over time, there should be plenty of people with HG repair expertise!

I guess replacing the transmission on my Honda Odyssey 2000 was preventive maintenance -- it prevented me from saving money to fix the 80!

LMAO, back then I think the general concensous was that I was some whack job out of his mind.

Well, agghhem, that consensus still stays my man, but while we're talking HG's, yer simply a wise man, any other subject I'll say yer a wise whack job!!! How's that???

:D :flipoff2: :D

Come on Rick, don't sell yourself short - we still think that :grinpimp:

I just got up the nerve to watch Doug's HG DVD as I know once I watched it I'd never sleep comfortably again until this gets done. I've got 166K on it and I'll be getting the DIY "kit" from Dan within the next month. Like Turbo though, I've never had any issues, no complaints and at this mileage and these use conditions, I don't really see it as a real downside - even if you paid someone to do it.

If I had a 1Z I'd look into getting a set of ARP studs, a high performance gasket and maybe even think about doing a higher torque on the studs like the Supra guys did on their 7Ms.

A HG job is not one that I would ever like to have to do more than once any given engine.

Here is a thought:

- Robbie will be touring the country...
- Dan puts together a parts package.
- Robbie takes his tool bag with him. We coordinate things with him. We provide food, shelter, (afterward), and whatever consideration is appropriate.
- He gets to see the country in plush friendly accommodation and see lots of nice trucks. We take him to all the nice local trails.
- We get new HGs.
- He writes a book about the experience.
- He becomes rich and (even more) famous.
- Everybody lived happily ever after!

Robbie: the Calif central coast is lovely at all times of year. We get nice beaches, mountains, forests, there is a university nearby well-known for parties and beautiful coeds (not that I would know anything about that). I have a comfortable guest room... :)

Just to make sure we are both talking about the same thing, in this picture I have highlighted two of the passages that appear to be clogged. The one on the left looks partially clogged and the one on the right looks to be completely clogged. Is it real, or is it memorex? :)

This HG issue seems to be the opposite of how you can get a rig with lockers without paying more because most people don't know what they are anyway.

Well, with the HG, we know there's a problem, but most people don't, so to us they're all essentially $2-3K overpriced. Unfortunately, that's honestly how I see it at this point: I'd love to have an FZJ, but wouldn't buy one unless the price felt right to me including an estimate for a HG replacement, and that's not likely to happen.

Bummer.

Depends on what you use it for. I've had mine for 40k miles and have spent a total of $15k on it incudling mods and pm. Now I guessemate that my HG will last me another 10-20k which will give me about 60k on a 12yr old car. I would say that is still substantially cheaper than getting another rig with lockers like a Heep Rubi, a Mercedes G waggon, or even a Power waggon. Where else can you get such a high quality vehicle for under 20k that can last you as long as an 80 or any LC could. IMHO I've gotten more than my moneys worth with this rig, even with the HG pm looming over my head.

I'm going to try to bring this up again- what are ppls opinions on the custom metal headgaskets sandwiched between 2 factory toyota headgaskets, as mentioned by EL_3grab? Apparently, this setup is commonly used in turbo applications there. I know this is used to slighlty lower compression, but would this provide any additional protection against HG failure?

Gumby- good question. I was talking with Jim over at TLC (legendary Cruiser shop here in SoCal) and he agreed with Robbie on the green vs. red coolant issue- he uses and prefers green in the 80s. He believes the Toyota red coolant promotes faster deterioration of the HG material and hoses over time, producing the small amount of black/gray material in the coolant that many of us see, and he recommends green coolant (such as Prestone Green or Lowtox) for the LCs. I don't know much about the subject, so don't know if any of this makes sense, but I'm just passing along information. The fact that this recommendation jibed with Cruiser-God Robbie's preference for green made me switch from years of Toyota Red to Prestone Lowtox on my last coolant flush.

I see that Rich, all I can say is nothing was completely clogged the way that looks, I can see straight down all of the pretty passages without any worry. Not sure what that is, perhaps some residue from sliding the head forward while lifting it off? Good eye, I'll ask Robbie if he saw something else. Thanks.
