I don't think much longer than 12 inches as far as shocks for concerned.
 
Don't discount the GM Astro Van steering box conversion. It is a Saginaw but has the reverse throw pitman arm so you don't have to compromise your cross member or shock tower. I had that setup for a long time on my 40 and wouldn't hesitate to do it again!

Kevin, doesn't the Astro Van box mount on the inside of the frame rail? I read somewhere else that the Scout II steering box is also a Saginaw box, but it mounts in approximately the same location as the FJ60 box, on the outside of the frame rail...

I will be using the BDS shocks that came with the HFS kit. They were actually longer than stock and will work great! I just need to get the passenger side on now...
