My buddies 82 with 22r has a leak out of the timing chain cover, it appears to be coming out of where the pulley attaches to the crank. I'm curious if this is just a rubber seal that went bad or what as I'm not very familiar with the 22r engine.

Yes, there is a rubber seal behind the pulley. It's just like the rear main, only smaller.

Bout time for some PM to. Unless he likes to throw the motor away or spend more on it b/c more is messed up?

If you need to know how to get to it, I strongly suggest the Timing Chain replacement link in the FAQ.

here it is, if you can see it

x2, this is a common leak point. You will need to remove the pulley, which can be a PITA. Once it's off, inspect the seal surface for a groove. If it's excessive, get a speedy sleeve for it. I would also recommend using a Toyota seal.

You may want to get a oil pump o-ring also, might be leaking there instead/also.......

Again, x2. Sometimes it's easier to replace the seal with the oil pump off the engine. There is no risk of boogering the end of the crankshaft this way. I would also consider a bead of RTV with the new o-ring. Keep track of where the bolts came out from, and make sure to put Teflon sealant on the bolt(s) that go into water jackets.

Make sure the key on the end of the crank stays there.

And if you do something real dumb a-- like strip the crank bolt .... go here.
