Finally hooked up my ancient camera last night to current computer so I'm now in the digital age....I think.

[/quote] we just got a digital cam.... now if I could figure how to use the damn thing... and how to post the pixs

Ok, here's another one. I really can put the beast up on ramps.

BTW, I have a Canon Powershot 600. Very first consumer digital camera Canon had, along with the Powershot 350 (or was it 300). No LCD, slow as he!!. Price was right - free.

Brent,
here is the advantage of a lift. no need for ramps. just slide under on the creeper with it flat on the ground.

I have a lower than normal garage door opening. I've got a beam halfway back that shortens the travel of the door opener track by a few inches. Thus the door, even when fully open impedes on the constructed opening by a couple of inches. I have to keep my antenna about 2-3 inches from completely up so it doesn't hit when I drive into the garage. A lift is out of the question.

$360 to replace the valve cover gasket?! I would get your money back less $30. That's a half hour job at the most, especially at the dealer.

Did they at least fix the diff leak for free?

Garages are for storing crap. The rig belongs in the driveway with the rest of them ;).

I'll keep her in the garage - people that don't know cruisers swear it's a new truck. Thanks Zaino! :D

They've replaced the EGR Valve $60 and book time on that of 1.5 hrs for free so far.

Don't know what the book labor on tomorrow's fix of the gear oil leak really is. I suspect they are cutting me some slack as they really missed the diagnosis big time on this one and they know it. I'm pleased that they're making it right.

I could tap in a new pinion seal up front in less than an hour using one of your fancy golf clubs ;). I certainly hope they are low cost for you.

So.. do you have to have a special tool as indicated in the FSM to get off the companion flange, or will any old Sand Wedge do??

Brent, you could buy an FSM, the parts and a couple of #6's and have a enough left over for a pizza party with the boys for that 180 bones. Just a thought.

Brent,

I won't comment on the quality of the mechanics or suggest you do the job yourself. That's for you to decide.

I would like for you to take a few minutes while it's up on those stands and look around the diff breather hose. We've seen several that were clogged and burping copious amounts of diff fluid out the breather, down the hose, and all over the diff housing. If that's your problem then the fix is very easy and you can do it yourself.

You should be able to tell if there is a lot of diff fluid on the breather and the hose. Here is a pic from George's site to help you locate the factory breather hose.

Let us know how it comes out and good luck!

Brent,

You got seriously swatted for that valve cover gasket. I don't care that they're "only" charging you for to do what needed to be done properly in the first place. Basically, you're paying $540 for a $200 job - plain and simple. ANY mechanic knows with a single wipe of the finger that is gear oil because it has a heavy smelly sulfurous smell. I can't believe they're not going to do more. Find a real mechanic. And breaking a part while replacing the wrong part doesn't make giving it to you free a bargain either. Yeesh. That stinks from top to bottom.

Dan,
you might be on to something here!! you are giving a whole new meaning to SST :D

Dan - $180. Talked to the mechanic directly this morning as leak is BEHIND where the gear oil was collecting on the bottom of the front diff. He pointed out the leak and I saw where it was dripping down the drive shaft to the front. He also pointed out several areas he had spent time steam cleaning and said that the valve cover gasket had definetely been leaking and it had masked this leak as there had been engine oil all over the upper oil pan, etc. Everything is still clean up above now and no dye showing up anywhere.

Last update - really stressed the engine this past weekend towing the trailer up the Tejon Pass. Beast kept a pretty solid 50 mph, but at 4200 RPM for quite awhile. Almost 500 miles total for the trip.

Best news - No runs, No drips = no more stuff on garage floor.
