Your rear lift handle, what prompted the bearing mod? Did you lose the ability to lock? Good luck man, cool project!

The lock latch sits down near the "crotch" of the handle lever arm so it should be ok. I need a set of new cylinders eventually. I thought the bearing might prevent binding and breakage. My old handle broke, presumably from friction/binding.

I like the soft top(drop gate) tailgate with the lift door.

I liked the original mustard yellow. Someone at some point did not, apparently. I don't know what they were thinking with lime green. I'm thinking dark brown or dark green with gray wheels, white top and white headlight surround. Thoughts?

Putting my 2 cents in on color.
I agree with your thinking above.
To me the FJ40 looks best in one of the drab original colors that would look terrible on anything else.
The sage green in the picture you posted above is one of my favorites, T303 Fashion green?
Rustic green, Olive, Mustard, Brown.

That said, the lime green plus black blotches somehow looks cool as the basis of a paint scheme for something else.

Typically the back hatch handle breaks where the notch for the lock is. While a pain loosing the struts before closing helps. Because the hatch rattles adjusting the catches tight is a must to reduce it. When opening pressing the hatch in with one hand and lift the handle with the other takes a lot stress of the handle. Forty-three years only broke one handle on my 68.

So hopefully I get my one broken handle outta the way right now! Thanks for the tips. I think it's funny how my current paint job was taken as a camo design. Its just the green paint with primer sprayed over bare metal where I started doing bodywork to prevent further rust. Wasn't really going for any design or anything. Haha

Yeah, a basic color seems appropriate and timeless. The interior is going to be brown leather, black carpet with some dark wood trim and chrome/stainless hardware. Once this thing is where I want it to be, I'm gonna drive the hell outta it. Not hard, just frequently. That's what it's for, ya know?

Hey guys, I'm under the dash cleaning up the wiring and I'm stumped. What is this box? Smog computer? Ignition module of some sort? Voltage regulator? I don't see any markings but the plug is huge and looks important. Found it near the fuse block on the driver's side footwell. Couldn't find it on any diagrams, there's so many variations of the fj40!
Thoughts?

Greetings from Afghanistan fellow Mudders!
Thought you guys might like a few fresh pics. My Afghan whip is the Land Cruiser, of course! Although I would have liked to drive the Defender, too. Mocked-up the wood dash before I deployed, looking good, I think! I'm probably going to use a more exotic wood when I get back and make it look like an old Jag or Benz wood dash. Restore the knobs and relocate the switches and cables. If you didn't notice, I relocated the rear heater hoses underneath the truck instead of through the cabin where they were before. I relocated the cowl drain hoses through the engine bay as well to further clean up the interior. Drilled a hole a few inches below the hose barb and routed them out down near the bell housing. Got new brake and clutch master cylinders on but never got time to bleed them. Modified the pedals as well. They don't sit up so high and close together now, more modern driving position. Comfortable. I'll try and get some pics of the armored LCs when I go out on my next mission.

P.S.- The dash will ultimately sit below the original metal dash strip, so it will be the same distance from the wood panels as the original bottom rubber pieces.

Nothing to add except thank you for your service...I work at a Naval Air Station and see these young troops every day serving their country...my signature says it all...keep the pics coming!!

“Headlight surround” is the bezel

Regardless of what you do to your LC don’t mind the naysayers. It’s your vehicle and you need to build it to suit you and your needs. I’m just glad to see another Cruiser having some life built back into it.

I spent a year in Afghanistan, 2010-2011. It’s a hole. Be careful and watch your six. Get home soon.

Thanks guys. Yeah, they don't call it Trashganistan for no reason. An ANA soldier propositoned my buddy yesterday, so that was kinda funny. I'm saving some cash so I'll slap some
