I went ahead got MotionX yesterday. I am trying to download a map to use for a SAR mission tomorrow. I'm just a volunteer. Never used Motion before. It is taking literally all day to download a 50MB map! WTF!?

That's not right. 50mb or 50gb???

Maybe my tutorial on map downloads might shed some light. http://youtube.com/watch?v=NzwmWR1MbuQ

I'm away from the iPad for the rest of the day. I will double check it again when I get home. My iPad shouldn't have 50gb of space left on it!

I try to keep my map sets well under 50mb... but I do have a few over 100mb. None over 200mb.

When I download map sets, I make sure my iPad has the good network connectivity. Just by bringing my iPad into the same room as my WiFi AP and giving it full USB power, the downloads go much faster. But even so, downloading 50mb+ from MotionX servers can take a while. I usually run large downloads overnight.

BTW, regarding iPad overheading... this could be due to a) iPad (original) b) black case, c) conditions (it gets hot here in the summer) and d) usage (trying to maintain constant GPS service). Remove the case and turning the iPad over (so it's black face is not in the sun) when not is use helps a lot. The issue just bad enough that it makes getting a good track hard. But now that I use GPS logging on my ham radio to create tracks, I don't have to worry about constant iPad GPS tracking. The usage change cured the problem.

Yeah it was plugged in, and in the same room as my wifi router...which is an Apple router too! It was the biggest sized map that MotionX would let me download. I think I was trying to download the furthest zoomed in of a pretty goos sized part of map.

So what are you guys using for offroad navigation? Especially remembering trails via GPS. I was thinking of maybe mounting a tablet in my rig to help with this.. So any advice is appreciated on what software is out there, and what works best.

Certainly i would want:
Points of Interest.
Ability to record(and share) recorded trails.

I tend to offroad in a lot of the same places.

I use smaller laptops to do all this and more. Netbook screens are too small for my liking but those would work too. I tend to interact with the laptop too much and having a touchscreen would annoy the crap out of me. Current laptop is an older HP/Compaq NC4200, 12" screen and it's been bulletproof. However, I'm thinking of going to a SSD (solid state drive).

I'm constantly writing comments for waypoints, importing data files, turning off/on layers, going in/out of 3D mode, etc. Often times, I'm creating routes many different ways for on road and offroad. The laptop is running Topo USA, Topo!, Topo Quads, Microsoft Streets & Trips, OBD-II diagnostic software, HAM radio freq programming software, along with the usual Microsoft Office stuff. This laptop also serves as a temp storage for picture files out of the camera SD card while we're out camping/wheeling.

Another bonus is the laptop can be used to check emails with the cell phone hotspot turned on so it's been very versatile for me. That works with any type of mobile device these days so not a big deal.

I'm not into web based mapping tools for my mapping needs while in the vehicle, just old fashioned that way!

Good luck with your search.

100% agree. For how and where we roll the iPad comes up short. As with everything however it's all related to application, needs and expectations.

Zoom 15 should be the highest res for download, anything more and you are wasting space. 10/15 is a good combo.

What's the tile count on the download?

I can't remember the tile size. I do remember that It wouldn't let me go any further on tile size though. So whatever is the max tile size.

Based on this I would say the file size would be much greater than 50mb. Typically if you are maxing out tile buffer it's it the muti gigabyte range.

Did you have a chance to ref my video above?

After getting a chance to watch your video, I don't remember what I was doing wrong, but I put the sliders a the settings you suggested, and was actually able to download the maps over a crappy 4G signal while away from home this past weekend! Just need to figure out the best configuration for my iPhone and iPad! Thanks Rob!

Paper maps & MVUMs

For work purposes I use a handheld GPS on the dash connected to a laptop using mapping software but it doesn't work good under tree canopy. It cuts out a lot.

Are you using an external antenna for your GPS too? I've found that when I have my GPS60 csx on the dash I need to connect the external antenna to it to get a good position when I'm in rough terrain or dense tree areas.

Just going from zoom 15 to 16 can double the file size! You're not getting any more real information at the high zoom levels. BTW zoom 15 1:24000 roughly so the topo maps from USGS shouldn't go any deeper than 15.

Glad it's working for you.

Absolute best app I have used is Alpine Quest. If you're If Android then don't waste your time on anything else. If you're looking at an I-device then stop and just get something with Android so you can use Alpine quest lol.

Gaia GPS - One click turns on trail recording, you can take a photo while recording and it will plot it to your track one click to turn record off and you can publish straight to Gaia's online site with one or two clicks as well. I think you can also email the track directly to yourself easily but haven't done it.
