Mike, I assume it's still ball and claw. If so and if you're keeping it that way it's NOT a 54mm it's something smaller. When I went to tear my axle apart for the disc swap on the LV last fall I thought how loose the nuts were until I found out that my socket wasn't catching them! I ended up being able to use a large pair of slip joint pliers.

I though about those pliers, looked all over for them and still turned up nothing... maybe I need to check my kids toybox... he has half of the 60 series I parted in there.

Pto

Tonight I took apart the PTO on Pacino, dissasembled and cleaned. Ready to be rebuilt.

Basically in lull cash times, I will work on stuff like this. It needs to get done.

Here are some pictures of the clean case 99% clean, need to get it finished.

I got these parts in about a month or so ago. With the PTO on hold due to part scrounging I've decided to tear into the axles. After dealing with a few family matters today I spent around an hour or so on the front ball/claw axle. The ball is awesome... looks like some kind of weapon out of Blade or something.

Here are a few pictures.

The above will do both front knuckles, wheel bearings, hubs and diferential's. If the gears check out... then new seals/bearings in both axles. Should last another 150K miles.

Put some parts in the washer and about 30 minutes later... clean parts.

I'm planning on tearing both front / rear axles and taking them with other parts and the frame to the sandblaster next week. Bring them back and apply some paint and reassemble the ball/claw and rear axle. Thats my plan... we will see what happens.

Got the axle stripped and cleaned. I was thinking of taking it to the blaster, but its so clean already. Little degreaser and it was 90% clean.

Took the grinder with some 36 grit to the axle... there were a few rough areas (bumps) from the casting I belive.

Also got the pumpkin dissasembled and cleaned. I have the kits to completely rebuild this axle. The bearings in the axle look great, grease looks good as well. It doesn't need to be rebuild, but I'm doing it anyways. It will be ground up so might as well do it right.

I will probably have the front axle cleaned painted and reassembled by monday. This work is too dirty for my boy... so out to the dump truck run I go.

Its been a while.

Question: Where can if find a good pinion bearing puller? What do you guys use..

I think the stuff that I ordered for this LV... expecially the bearings are the incorrect ones... though I am told they will work. Finally starting on the rebuild part of the front axle. Got the axle and rear dif housing cleaned up by taping, sandblasting, sanding and priming... just to keep it from rusting.

Pulled out the bearings and sized them up to the bearings on the differential to the ones Christo sent me. I dont think they are going to work. Does anyone know if the bearings (size) on the pinion gear are the same from 64 through 78? Just curious because the box says something like Diff rebuild kit from 68-78 or something.. but Mine is a 64.

I fogot this thread existed. But its time to revive. I pulled a couple LV frames out of the back yard and back to the driveway. Got about 2 hours testing the new 150lb presure pot blaster suited up to my 80 Gallon direct drive speedair. Much better setup than the Husky 80 with the blaster... much better. Recovery of sand is 4 times faster with the 6hp craftsman vacuume.

Just a few pictures, I finished up 1/6th of the blasting.

I look at this thread and I think it is officially the slowest LV project here! Ha. Hopefully my son won't be 16 when I finish it.

I spend more time buying tools to work on it, than physically working on it.

Here is the latest toy I picked up. It is a Car/body dolly. I will use it to move the body around.

No, I think I have that lowly distinction!! I haven't touched the LV other than locating parts since last summer!!

I'll be back into it come August though. This year has been a year of surgeries for me (heart valve repair and hip replacement)!

Progress????

Hi again.

Believe it or not I've been up to a few things behind the scenes.

I took my LV frame for this LV to the blasters *FINALLY*. It with a large trailer frame cost me about $580 to blast clean. Tomorrow I go pick it up with the Towtruck. Also got some DP90LF for the bare metal on the Frame. Tomorrow I clean with I think MT330 and paint. I will do this outside and the temperature is going to be a perfect 70.

Also picked up another tool. A Miller 185. Still need to get a bottle and helmut, but I really dont need it right away. The rotissery is almost complete thanks to a good guy that lives in these parts that has a nice LV himself.

Buckroseu is also lending a hand with paint selections and he has recommended clear coating the Primer and going with that. Tomorrow I figure out how much 2 coats of clear will push me back.

Question for you smart Landcruiser Junkies. What axles should I go with if I want to put disk brakes on? The 1964 axles I have are Ball and Claw and I think I am going to get away from them... even though it would not make this a purist I have already purchased the rebuild kit for the axles...

Tomorrow paint 2 frames.. Time frames throw me, but I hope to get axles blasted and rebuilt, just need to find a set of donor axles to rebuild.

Cheers and thanks to all that have helped with this project.

Easiest is the complete FJ40 disc brake axle. The ball and claw housing does NOT have the recesses to install the inner axle seals so you CANNOT use the ball and claw housing.
There is a rumor that there are seals available but unless someone posts up part numbers DON'T believe it. I tried that and I could NOT find seals.

Progress denied.

Today I was only able to pick up the frames. $545 later I hauled them home and unloaded with an engine hoise and some red neck ingenuity.

I was planning on painting, but my wife came home and said that it was supposed to rain. That put me in panic mode as the weather stated 20% chance of rain.

I literally had 1 minute left between sun and rain. the rain came down just after I covered and moved the frames around. The trailer frame is huge so I had to move it under my roofline and tarp it. I did this with the engine hoist. That hoist has come in handy.

Here are a few pictures. Hopefully tomorrow.
