5K on top of the MSRP at Toyota of Richardson in Texas.

Went to see the Black Cherry color at another dealer's lot today. THe FJ was behind a chain link fence, so we couldn't get close............however, this one had two dealer markup stickers on it.

One added about $675 of dealer's add-ons that purported to get you something...dooredge guards, seat protector treatment, vin etching, and something else I can remember now. The other one added $4,995 of "market premium" to the price.

What a remarkable business. ;)

5K over MSRP at one dealer (Hudiburg Toyota) and 6K over MSRP at another (Dub Richardson). They call it "market adjustment", I call it bend over and take it up the tailpipe.

I wouldn't buy one from these dealers in Oklahoma City.

I was talking to a sales guy at toyota of plano last night and i asked him if they plan on selling the FJ for 5K over and he said yes and i asked why and this was his answer "its priced high to keep volume down while we produce more so there won't be a shortage." Probably the stupidest answer i have heard...pricing more for a car so production can keep up. He did say once more FJ's hit the market the 5K will come off.

I guess you have to pay to play with the cool kids. If I needed to buy a 4x4 now I would rather get a Taco or 4R, maybe even a GX for the prices I have seen. Even GX's can be had for in the mid $40s nicely equipped with some bargaining, so I don't know what some of dealers are smoking asking high $30s for a FJC. Pending if demand stays up people will be buying the same FJC in a years time for high to mid $20s

Its not price fixing unless they all get together and agree. They are permitted to charge whatever people are willing to pay. We would all do the same thing, but I'd bet a few of us would be smarter about it.

We'll see what happens to these premiums. One dealer called yesterday to gauge how much I'd actually pay........stuck to no more than sticker. He still has the car I drove. My sense was he was looking for an offer of maybe 1K over.

The dealers are likely to create another slug of bad will here with the people who put down deposits. I'll bet none of them were told what their proposed price was going to be. I'll also bet that few of them are interested in paying these ridiculous markups. The economy is softening, interest rates are rising, gasoline prices are firm and no one can sell low gas mileage specialty vehicles without meaninful discounts. Great time to add to the sticker price on a car that gets no better than average mileage.

Frankly, if you were going to pay one of these premiums, you should demand something of real value for it, like a 7 year extended transferrable warranty and free scheduled maintenance.......plus a 25% discount on all parts purchases and free loaners.

If it is all $5000 than there may be price fixing.
Actually, one dealership in Jacksonville had a $3500 premium, another at $5000 and another at $6000. I guess it's whatever the market (or desperate customers) will bear.
