We *might* have a chance to swap out our front bumper for one with an OEM winch plus $450 give or take a few $. The winch is currently on a '97 diesel LC that has been stored for 11 years and now is for sale.

What's the story on the OEM winch, good/bad/ugly? Is the deal worth it or go aftermarket?

My 8274 is "only rated" for 8k. I've never had any issues unstucking.

The OEM winch was supplied by Superwinch from memory. If I'm wrong Beno will correct me:doh: Parts should not be the hard to source if that is the case. you'd be hard pressed to get any other winch on there for $450. If it works and you like the OEM look I say go for it.

I've been told the OEM winches are Aisin units???

The reasons we are entertaining this winch set up are;

1. To get us out of a bind maybe a couple of times a year (emergencies).

2. OEM look and fit (coolness factor as mentioned).

We'd like to know if for $450, it could be done with a better set up EVERYTHING included, i.e. winch + materials/brackets/bases to complete the installation in an existing LX 450 bumper?

The "8274" is nice, but it certainly won't fall in that price point ;p

Do you own a welder or at least have a friend with one? If you have to pay to have one installed I say no. You can certainly buy an entry level winch for less than $450. Steel is pretty cheap. Cutting a hole in your existing bump is free.

Typed poorly from my iPhone using IH8MUD

No welder but labor is dirt cheap. A fabbed winch mount and cutting the hole in the bumper might run me $80 worst case. That would leave $420 for a winch assuming a $500 budget.

Entry level winch < OEM Aisin

By a lot.

Pull the trigger on this. $450 for a factory winch. You won't get hurt.

You will if the $450 winch you buy doesn't work and you can't buy parts for it except in UAE or some other place on the planet.

Just get a Warn 8000K for $500-600 and be done for a very long time.

:meh:

Lots of HDJ81's up here with factory winches. They go for considerably more than $500. The remote alone is worth hundreds.
