I am looking for the upper door frame (not the actual door), but the frame peice that the door sits against on the OEM soft top bows. The part that attaches to the bow at the door piller, then connects to the windshield frame. I'm looking for the early style like pre 65. My soft top bows are from a 71, and my doors are 65 (the tall style) If anyone has a set that they would like to trade for my set, or has a set they would like to sell, either way. Here's a pic of mine. The way it is now, my doors don't fit right, because the top of the door hits the lip on the brackets. Thanks,

I doubt you will find anything in this country. What your trying to do is something I've never seen come in to this country or at least not this early which is mount hard doors with soft top bows. FJ25s and early FJ40s thru 63 used a completely different soft top setup. Sometime in 65 the windshield and doors changed. The angle on the side of the windshield changed and the hard top doors got shorter. After that time the soft top and hard top doors fit the same opening. I'm not sure what the bows were like for the 64 and 65 model but I think it's probably pretty close to what you have now for the piece over the door. The weather stripping for the soft doors fit in a track along the outside of the door while the hard doors was glued along the inside edge. I know the piece above the doors for the FJ25s and early FJ40s was thicker like the later ones just shorter. This makes me think the 64 and 65 soft top bows piece were thick too.

Here's two things you can do.

1. Run soft top doors from a later FJ40. The front edge will be off a little but the soft top door should be able to bend that much. I have a 63 hard top I got sitting around and right now I got soft top doors to keep it closed up. The doors are a little short.

2. Find the pieces from above the door on a early hard top and add the channel for the canvas to go thru. Then figure out how to attach it to the B pillar bow.

you could also modify the later door bow...cut along the top edge right where the angle stops and bend inward so it is flat...then you would need a weather stripping piece to go onit as the hardtops did.

AFAIK that should work...


do you have a pic of the door up against the door bow?

as john said...you are just not going to find a FST bow for that door.
 
Yeah I've thought about getting the peice from an early style hard top and fabing it up.

Cutting the existing peice is not really an option, too much would have to be removed.

Hey John, It's been along time! I hope you understand, but I really don't feel good about trading my bows for a set that are for a hard top, I'll have to modifiy the hard top bows, and if they did'nt work out, I'd be out of my original bows. Which would be fine if I used later model doors or soft doors. If you want to sell me the hard top peices, and I can get them to work, then I would be fine with letting the soft top bows go. Thanks,

Yup, I would hate to break up a pair when I only need a left side, could you send me an e-mail @ pardion@comcast.net and I can find a couple early bows. John
 
I went ahead and cut the driver door bow tonight and rewelded the cut peice in at a different angle. I ended up cutting a 1" section out of the bow. Now the door shuts and seals good! And it even looks prety OEM! Just need to repaint:frown:. I know this is totally the wrong forum for this, but I'll post some pics of the fix. I'm just exited that it turned out for the good!
 
since you dont have a star ....you can only post soo many pics...if i had a star ...i would post them up for ya...but...as many here in MUD i'm poor :rolleyes:

if you remove the 1st 2 pics you can post a finished piece and an installed finished piece :)

I would have done the same :) Glad it worked out for ya.

and this is the correct forum for that early fj40.
