more photos. The guard around the winch is unbolted and leaning a bit in the photos. It is not bent. Just needs bolted back on.

Does anyone know if this '73 will fit my '74 xfer case? I'm wanting it but I need to know more about the transition from '73 to '74...seems like I saw something about the transition from the 3-speed to the 4-speed xfer case...I don't want to buy something I will then have to turn around and sell...Thanks in advance!

All you need is a 16 spline transfercase pto gear, it might be there, pull the pto cover and see if you have a second straight cut gear, if so it will bolt up. I have a 16 spline pto gear here if you need one.

Thanks!

If It doesn't I will holler at you!

I have committed to the purchase..so hopefully this will be a good learning experience....will have a 10K Warn winch up for grabs if anyone wants it......thanks again...

@ whitney....yep..a true FJ40, etc...is my goal..she may not be as pristine as some but I am trying to get her as original as possible no matter how bad my painting expertise will be.....

The good thing is that guys like you are out there, and there is a tight knit group when it comes to the old Toyota's'..

..if anyone reading this is on the fence for buying one you better buy it now...I bought this 9/74 in '83 and had no idea it was a factory soft-top until maybe 3 years ago....some pecker head had replaced the canvas and bows with Jeep stuff...JEEEZ!

Anyway, thanks for your post us Cruzr Heads rock!!

At the risk of getting slammed by the seller, I'd have a closer look at that winch. I'm not calling myself an expert, but I own a PTO winch and this one looks pretty "modified" to put it nicely.

I'm pretty sure the one u-joint is a steering u-joint from some other vehicle that has been welded into the original shaft, more than likely because there are no original replacements out there. And that pillow block piece looks highly modified as well. There has been some plates booger welded to the roller guards (don't know if that is their exact name). There is also a strange ball joint there.

Original PTO is very simple. Winch head, short shaft attached to winch head via sheer pin. Another short shaft with pillow block goes through frame, gets bolted to the frame and attaches to that shaft via the splined ends. Then there is a long shaft that connects to the PTO gearbox and the pillow block shaft via bolted flanges. That's it. Later years had a different type pillow block shaft because it attached to the frame differently and there are variations in the length of the longer shafts due to different transmissions, but that should be about it.

I shamelessly stole this pic from the Internet and it shows you all that you need (minus the gearbox).

thanks for your input...IF I need to replace the items you see that are suspect...how do I find the replacements to put this in original condition?

Thanks..

The u joints are fine. The front one had part of the frame piece still on it. The driveshaft looks to be welded and the front guards has metal side plates welded on to guide the wire on the winch. I could remove that in 5 minutes. Not a big deal. Obviously some of these things must be difficult for some people. I torched the frame piece off in 1 minute.
