Epoxy is applied. We are just going to shoot RAL 1001 on it and skip the paint step. It’s a damn close match to paint code 4E9

Nice!

Looks like those springs don't have much curvature to them. Will there be enough room for articulation?

Trailers don’t articulate. They springs hold a load. With the pivot point in the trailer ball it
Won’t articulate like a 4 wheeled vehicle.

are you saying that the axle won't move with respect to the frame when you go over bumps and such? If that were true, there would be no need for springs at all.

If it wasn't clear I was wondering about the spacing between the top of the axle and the frame.

It was spring over before. It should be fine. Springs look like my M416 springs.

Yeah I thought you meant articulation like twisting. These don’t rub

well, if it was spring-over before and you now run it as spring-under, that will decrease dramatically the free space for axle vertical motion ( between highest point and frame). Looks like the spring mounts are just about even with the top of the axle now, so you'd want fairly long mounts/shackles, I would think. Like in that spring-under axle pic just above, there is indeed a good deal of space between the top of the axle and the frame, but that is likely at least partly because of the rather long spring mounts/shackles, looks like. If you don't have that on your new trailer is there a chance of contact perhaps? And will shocks if any have to be changed?

added: of course, if you have strong springs and a light load, a small spacing may be enough then, but perhaps no longer so if the load increases significantly.

This trailer did not have shocks

This trailer was way too high before in my opinion. I’mJust guessing this will work fine. If not it will take me 15 minutes to swap it back.

The spring is going to stay the same relative to the frame. The axle goes above and the only thing that changes is the tire to the fender

I'm thinking that spring-under is the more desirable configuration actually. I believe that people often do spring over to increase "lift" and have then to improvise spring mounts, flip things around, and run into issues like camber etc. Not that great if badly done. You may well be getting back to the better original configuration.

Fantastic!

Can the springs be de-arched (flattened) to drop the height midway between spring-under/over and fix the stink-bug on the Oddball80 issue?

Not really. I could get a normal size axle tube and it wouid drop some. Remove some leafs. All things I don’t feel like fooling with to be honest. The SUA would also work with some smaller tires. The Yokos are almost 2” taller in the same measurement as my BFG 235/85-16 KO2s. They would likely tuck in there right like on my 416.

I like the look. I’m still going to get my 80 color matched and paint the trailer though. It looks good but it’s not a match. I want this thing to really match. I’m way too deep to stop now

it's a little nose down but not egregiously so IMO as it stands in the pics. I could live with it personally. It will get worse if you load the back of the truck a lot, though.
Of course, you could move the pintle up a bit with a riser but there may be issues with the tailgate then. I for one tend to forget it's there and ugly things can happen with that...
It'd be easy to weld a new lunette arrangement a bit lower, though. And I do like the idea of having a removable lunette, actually, that is a good theft deterrent. Easy to put it on a 2" tube and receiver and take it with you when you leave camp. Cuz lowlifes will like the trailer too. And you can make the lunette freely rotating too if you are really going to go to town offroad.

If I were going to make the trailer match the truck, I'd look at vinyl rather than paint. So it'd be easy to remove if I ever need to sell it.

Yeah. I’m not going to worry about the nose down. I have airbags on the 80 so there is that. No reason to mess with this cool trailer or Lunette. It’s very unique. As for selling it, that’s not happening. It won’t get used much. Mainly just to show it with the truck. I have a m416 for trips in the other cruisers. I don’t pack that heavy anymore.

This thing had pounds of bondo on it that the creators used to smooth out these stitch welds and wavy steel. I love seeing the stitches personally

Nolen, sorry for getting off topic here, but why do I like that 80 so much. I don't care for the newer Cruisers and know nothing about them, is there something different with yours?

Yeah. It’s just barely an 80 really.

No sunroof. No flares. 5 speed. Part time manual transfer. Ambulance doors. Cloth seats for 10.

It’s what you and I would want from a 💩80

Was that an import?
Cliff Notes

Air Force bought it in Saudi. 3F Carb
Sent it to the US and it was converted to 3FE
Sent back to Saudi. Was a Moral Welfare Recreation truck at Eskahn Village for Security Forces (cops)
Imported back to US. Sold at auction.
Sold again at auction in 2005
Barely used for 14 years until I found it.

Purchase price plus $5000 (or $25,000) later it’s mine and a super great ride

Took the 80 and had the paint matched/scanned for the trailer last week. I’m taking it down to my painter this week to get it shot

Before final paint goes on I wanted to cut out the cancer. Other than the one area on the floor the other areas were traps where mud and water have collected forever.

Just sheet metal though. Frame under there is good to go. Pitted but solid. I laid the rust converter on it heavy and we will paint over it
